Toolleen is a dot on the map between Heathcote and Elmore on the Northern Highway in Victoria on the way to Echuca.

Your reason to stop at the dot is probably the sighting of the , a place to stretch your legs and perhaps boil the billy for a cuppa.

There is an undercover area with three picnic tables and the nearby toilets are clean and well maintained, at least the men's is.

After you have made your cuppa you will notice that illustrated information boards tell a little about the flora of the area.

Nearby you will notice a tall tree stump and a plaque atop a short stump.

The plaque reads, "Toolleen Telephone Tree. Established circa 1930s by district farmers to distribute local manual telephone to surrounding properties."

Across the road is the Toolleen Hotel, café, general store and post office. Behind the hotel is the Tin Shed, which is a function room catering for up to 150 guests.

A nearby pathway may attract your attention and wandering over to it a sign indicates it is the start of a 150 metre nature walk.

The walk is a flat meandering path with name plaques on many of the trees and shrubs that you encounter.

At the end of the short walk, a picnic table awaits if you wish to linger longer.

In springtime I would expect to see many wildflowers on this short stroll.

Just past the hotel on the Toolleen – Cornella Road a wooden building in the middle of a paddock catches the eye. Closer inspection reveals it is Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

I have passed this wayside stop many times on the way to Echuca, but once you stop you find there is a lot to be seen in Toolleen.
