Are you even a sandgroper if you don't know the Spud King?

Somehow, I missed out on getting a ticket to Tony Galati, The Musical when it debuted as a sold-out season of Fringe World 2019. I think I soaked up the hype and thought maybe it was just really good PR.

I can be a bit cynical that way.



Plus, being ex-musical theatre showgirl means I'm hard to impress when it comes to the jazz hands and the timestepping.

But Tony Galati was impressive, from the consistent Perth puns to the all singing, all dancing cast, the tight script, and the sheer talent of a belting vegetable.



This is the story of Perth's favourite veggie man, Tony Galati, who took on the beaurocrats and pollies and won the fight to feed the people of Perth as many wonky potatoes as we'd like.

The Musical version of this tale includes the iconic blue vest, a couple of wicked eyebrows, some ripper dance moves, and have I mentioned the best singing voice ever to come out of a root vegetable yet?



Tony Galati is a Fringe Show you can safely take your kiddos to, and your Gran. And you'll cackle, bop along to the on-stage musicians, and find yourself singing about internal vegetables long after you've walked back to the carpark.

I know. I've been singing to my husband and children there's a food in their soul ever since opening night.



Tony Galati, The Musical was written by Dan Debuf, who said "In Perth, some of the best things we create are from people working together. And then once I realised we could have a singing potato, there was no way I could let this story pass me by.""So many people missed out last year on this joyous local story that we just had to bring it back in 2020."
