Ton Ton Tonkatsu in Kobe is one of the many restaurants that are part of the Umie Mosaic Shopping Centre, a shopping complex located close to the Umie North and South Malls that primarily focus on Japanese-style food and products. The restaurant proved to be very popular with a large crowd present when we visited.
The main focus is, of course, their Tonkatsu dishes, which can be ordered as various set meals. The set meals consisted of either the Tonkatsu by itself or came with other types of fried foods. Their Tonkatsu was very enjoyable to eat, with succulent flesh set off wonderfully by the golden brown coating. Diners had to create their own dipping sauce. It was done by first grinding the sesame seeds in the bowl they were served in, then pouring the sauce from the bigger jar provided at each table over the sesame seeds. Dressing for the shredded cabbage salad was available from the small jar at the table.

A good choice for vegetarians, the Minced Cabbage Herekatsu Set Meal replaced the pork cutlet with one that was made from minced cabbage. The minced cabbage had a lovely soft texture.

Ton Ton's Umie Set Meal was notable in that the pork cutlet was stuffed with green beans. Aside from giving it an eye-catching appearance, the green beans also provided a bit of bite to the dish. All their set meals came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles and mustard.

While we would have liked their Karaage Chicken to have a stronger ginger taste, the flesh was still succulent and contrasted well by the crisp coating. A lemon wedge was provided to add a bit of tanginess and sharpness.

Their Crab Croquette was perfect for sating our hunger while waiting for our mains to be served. It was fried to golden brown and the filling was not mushy. There was also enough crab included in the filling to make eating it a satisfying experience.

The décor of the restaurant gave it a comfortable and casual feel. Its location makes it convenient for shoppers around the area to grab a bite to eat.
