I have always enjoyed watching Tommy Dean on television shows such as
Gruen,
Spicks and Specks and
Rove Live but have never seen him in a live performance. His hour-long show
Smug was very funny in a laid back 'dad joke' way. The audience, who were mostly older than 40, readily identified with Tommy's dissertations on road rage, inner city parking problems and the perils of home renovation and family life.
Smug was playing at
Factory Theatre in a carpark shipping container as part of the
2018 Sydney Comedy Festival . Tommy is not smug about his life but is happy to embrace small delights such as a great parking spot, a double oven or being able to multitask whilst doing the laundry. He is happy to share his passions about the perfect pancake and how that is related to creationism vs evolution theory.
Residing in Australia for more than 20 years, Tommy was raised in Arizona and his booming voice demonstrates this origin as does some of his expressions, especially when referring to anecdotes from his youth. He was really easy to listen to and even opened himself to questions which were dealt with in a light-hearted friendly manner. The hour flew by and I would have been happy to continue listening to his theories and stories.
If you ever get the chance go and see that 'American' guy from TV, you won't regret it!
