This Saturday, on the 25th February, make your way down to The Yarra Valley, one of Victoria's most celebrated food regions, for the Peace Farm's annual Tomato Festival. In Yarra Junction, just off the Warburton Highway, this all-day event attracts in excess of 200 people. The days' festivities run from 10am-5pm and presents a warm, community vibe that welcomes families and friends who have a passion for permaculture, music, dance and healthy living.

The themes of the festival are Education, Art, Permaculture, Community and Enterprise- very much in line with the concepts of CERES Environmental Park in Northcote, but this is a localised event, Yarra Valley-style. Entry fee is a $5 donation for families or a car load. If you want to make a real day of it and also have a palate for cool zone wines, Yarra Burn winery is just a stone's throw away, also on Settlement Road.

The Peace Farm is the vision of Murray and Vicky both of whom are passionate about Healing, sustainable, ecological living and permaculture. There is a Healing space allocated, which I expect will not only provide peace for those who are seeking solace, but is also an opportunity for group meditations, likely to be led by Murray who is a practitioner of Japanese Acupuncture and Medicine meditation facilitator at Jing HealthCare in Lilydale. Ask him about his regular Monday lunchtime classes.

There are two scheduled dance classes: LA Salsa, which will also be taught by Jing Space instructors at 11.30 am and Tarantella, a rapid, whirling Italian folk dance to entertain afternoon visitors after 2pm. The dance class-style is crowd-inclusive and indoor-outdoor dance space will be determined by the weather. If you are local, ask dance instructors about where you can go to continue Street Latin partner-dancing and traditional folk dancing- they will happily direct you to a class and social event that suits. Live music will feature throughout the day.

It is the humble tomato, however, that the festival highlights and celebrates. Tasty treats will be served throughout the day. 'Tomato throwing' offers a 'lighter side' and cooking demonstrations that show the tomato at its iconic best: pizza, passata, salsa and spreads and pasta are also a culinary feature. In addition, just to celebrate the fruit's warmth and appeal, organisers have advertised a 'saucy fashion parade'. Farm tours, that will entertain children as well as permaculture enthusiasts, will run throughout the day. Visitors have the chance to purchase seedlings.

The Peace Farm has a solar oven and other 'green tech' additions that Vicky and Murray will and demonstrate with pride. The Tomato Festival has home-grown and home-made food available: pizza, pasta dishes and of course, a BBQ planned for lunch. There will also be cakes, coffee and tea.

Children will have plenty to occupy their interest: as well as the above-mentioned organised activities, The Peace Farm has a relaxed family vibe offering families the chance to engage in outside time and really enjoy modern, country lifestyles. Call me old-fashioned, but the Peace Farm's space alone invites children to make their own fun.
