Pizza, pasta and gelato – the Italian dream
Tomato Brothers Wilston is a quaint Italian family restaurant in Wilston serving wood-fired pizzas, pasta, risotto and gelato. I admit that I only found out about this Italian restaurant in Wilston through a coupon deal they had advertised, which I subsequently bought, but I was glad that this gave me the opportunity to discover what they had to offer.
The meal consisted of pizza bread and dips to share, a main course of your choice and two scoops of ice-cream for dessert. This is actually part of their banquet deal which costs $29 per person. Not bad for a full three course meal.
We arrived fairly early just after opening time at 5pm and the restaurant started to fill up not long after, despite being a Wednesday night. The restaurant was larger than it looked on the outside, with specials chalked up on the board and cute kitsch decorations lined up on the walls. Upon entry, you have an open view of the kitchen.
pizza bread and dips
Service was efficient, with our entrée served quickly just after we placed our order. We were spoilt for choice from the menu and had a difficult time trying to choose a main course from the many pizza, pasta and risotto offerings upon offer with various ingredients ranging from prawns, seafood, chorizo, steak, chicken and bacon. The main courses range in price from $18-$21 if you decide to order them separately. The pizza flavours looked quite interesting, especially with combinations that you don't usually get from the average pizza joint.
creamy salmon pasta
In the end, I settled for the creamy smoked salmon pasta with spirals and parmesan cheese. My partner ordered the surf and turf pizza which came with prawns and steak. Our 10 inch pizza bread arrived, drizzled in cheese and accompanied by four different kinds of dip which tasted like basil, pesto, sun-dried tomatoes and salmon dill. The pizza bread tasted great by itself but the dips definitely added to the variety of the taste.
delicious surf and turf
We actually felt quite full by the time entrée was finished but bravely made a start on our mains. My salmon pasta was very rich and creamy but it had too many capers for my liking. It still tasted good and the portion was so huge that after my entrée, I only managed to finish a little more than half of what was served. My partner enjoyed his surf and turf pizza with a large prawn on each piece but couldn't finish his 10 inch pizza either.
Customer service was great as the waitress noticed that we still had quite a bit left and asked us if we wanted to pack it up to take it home without any prompting. She then proceeded to ask us to choose two flavours from their gelato bar for dessert.
The gelato bar had a large selection of flavours from rum and raisin, boysenberry, rocky road, baci, mango, coconut and lemon to name a few. I convinced myself that gelato is a lot healthier than ice-cream and that I could indulge even after the full meal and ordered a rum and raisin and baci ice-cream (normally included in the banquet or $5.50 for two scoops).
I really enjoyed my gelato, topping up a pleasant dining experience. Obviously the locals thought so too with the tables filling up when we left the restaurant. I would definitely visit again if I am around the neighbourhood. You can even order and pay for a meal on their mobile app!
