You'll find this little restaurant about half way along bustling Glebe Point Road, just a few doors down from the AB Hotel. Thai restaurants are anything but few and far between in Glebe and as such, they have to be something special to be successful. The team at Tom Yum Tum Gang seems to be doing something right though as the place is generally packed full at all times of the day. Bookings are unfortunately not accepted but you won't have to wait long for a table as the food is prepared extremely quickly, resulting in a steady turnover of diners coming and going.
The restaurant itself is quite small and a lot of tables have been squeezed into it, making it a somewhat cosy affair. During the warmer months it's a good idea to try and score a table by the open doors or, even better, outside on the footpath, as things can get a bit sticky inside. The numerous staff members float between the open kitchen and the dining area, squeezing themselves between tables to deliver glasses of ice water and sizzling plates to the hungry customers. The pace is somewhat hectic, but the staff are nothing if not friendly and inviting. In fact, the staff are some of the friendliest I have encountered in the area. The large screen TV on the wall can be a bit of a distraction, but only until the food arrives and demands full attention.
Tom Yum Tum Gang serve up simple, authentic Thai dishes. Their menu isn't the fanciest but it is fairly extensive and most of the classics are well represented alongside a few lesser known dishes. More importantly, the food tastes fantastic, is cooked quickly and dishes are brought out while still piping hot. Although they don't hold back on chilli, if like me you like it hot, ask for your dish to be cooked 'authentically' spicy and you're sure to be in need of few extra glasses of that icy cold water.
The price for a main is between $10-15 and at lunchtime all dishes are $7.50 (excluding seafood dishes which are $10), which is fantastic value for money considering the size of the portions, the speed with which they are delivered and of course the taste. Make sure you pay a visit to the ATM beforehand though as there are no EFTPOS facilities.
