On our recent trip to Tokyo, we were fortunate to stay at Shiba Park Hotel in the Minato area. This hotel is four minute walk from Subway Daimon Station and eight minute walk from JR Hamamatsucho Station. While walking to the stations, we passed by many eating places serving delicious food across a wide range of prices.

We had our first meal at a Katsudon and Tonkatsu eating place which offers dishes starting at 500 yen. The tables and chairs felt tiny to us. Fortunately we were having an early lunch and the place was quiet so we could 'spread out'. The deep-fried pork cutlet in the Tonkatsu was crisp and golden and was complemented nicely by the accompanying cabbage salad. The store provides Tonkatsu sauce to pour over the pork cutlet and the Tonkatsu also comes with a packet of mustard that you can dip the pork cutlet in. The pork cutlet in the Katsudon was also crisp and golden which is wonderfully contrasted by soft and fluffy eggs with onions.




'Five dollar bowl' is another cheap and nice eating place. We call it 'five dollar bowl' because the dish that we like cost around 500 yen, which is about A$5. You order your food from a vending machine, take the token, find a seat around the serving counter and hand the token to the service staff. Small eating places in Japan are usually operated in this manner. The medium sized bowl I ordered was surprisingly generous and the meat was tender and delicious.







Mos Burger is Japan's equivalent of McDonalds. Apart from normal burgers, they serve burgers with rice patties instead of buns. The rice patties were an unusual but fitting accompaniment to the savoury filling. The burger actually looks much better than the photo suggests, as I forgot to take a picture of the burger before I started eating it.



Foodcourts at shopping centres are another source of reasonably priced food. Food available there includes typical Japanese food like Udon, Ramen, Tempura and Takoyaki (Octopus Balls). The Takoyaki was golden and fluffy which encases a delectable morsel of octopus.





As I found out, delicious food in Tokyo does not mean you have to spend a lot of money and they are worth seeking out.
