The
Beam Contemporary is hosting a new exhibition by celebrated Brisbane-based artist
Karla Marchesi . Titled
To Have and to Hold, this is Marchesi's first solo exhibition of 2012 and it brings together a series of paintings which were inspired by "
abandoned spaces and discarded objects ".
This reoccurring theme of the lost, the forgotten and the abandoned, has largely been evident throughout Marchesi's career - from her début exhibition
Interiors, hosted at the
Heiser Gallery in 2008 and
Dwelling hosted at
Metro Arts also in 2008. More recently, Marchesi held another exhibition at the
Heiser Gallery , titled
Left Behind in 2010 and last year the artist held her first solo Melbourne exhibition, titled
Deterior , at the
Blindside Gallery .
Marchesi, the recipient of a number local and international arts awards, including 1st Prize at
Redland Art Awards and runner-up at 16th
Pine Rivers Art Awards , has a realist painting style and her paintings are largely focused on personal spaces and the objects which occupy this space. They are often stark, thought provoking images - for example view 'These myths no longer ring true' - pictured below.
You can view more examples of Marchesi's work on her
official website .
To Have and to Hold will run from Friday, 30th March to Saturday, 5th May, 2012.
There is a special exhibition opening event on Saturday 31st March from 3pm to 5pm.
