What a wonderful idea this is despite the sadness surrounding children with a terminal illness. The TLC Ambulance takes children in palliative care to a treasured destination, perhaps for the final time.
TLC for Kids was established in 1998, and is "the leading Australian children's charity helping sick kids and their families cope with the challenges of everyday life with illness".. But more than that, they deliver, comfort, hope, compassion and fun as well, whatever is needed to get a family through the tough and very sad times of having a child with a terminal illness.
TLC for Kids listens to the child's wishes and organises the TLC ambulance to take them wherever(as much as possible) their wish and destination is. This could be something as simple as taking a child home to pat their dog and often this means all the equipment they may be connected to needs to come as well. Or it could be a trip to Luna Park to have some fun or a visit to a favourite park. The TLC Ambulance, with paramedics, safely provides round-trip transport for the child and their family to the chosen destination. The family receives a package of photos and footage that capture the beautiful moments and memories created during their trip.
There is one TLC Ambulance in operation and now TLC for Kids is seeking further donations from generous donors to put another TLC ambulance on the road. This would double the number of children who are in palliative care to be able to have their wish fulfilled. If this is something you would like to do, please go to the TLC Ambulance website, any amount is welcome and maybe this is a better way to be a Kris Kringle in this pre-Christmas season.
