Northlands is looking up these days with quite a few big names added to their list. Here is this massive warehouse kind of store that looks like Santa came in an dumped his knapsack and let the gifts fall where they may. It certainly looks like that's how TK Maxx came into being. It's located where the old Lincraft store used to be and so you take the escalator down to basement level. It's almost like going down into the cave of treasures for you soon forget you're in a very busy shopping mall that's carrying on overhead oblivious to you and your hunt for treasure. In fact, that's what the TK Maxx experience is all about. I don't think anyone comes in here with a shopping list. It's more about not knowing what you'll find and carting it away gleefully.

Let the treasure hunt begin.

The shopping begins the moment you step off the escalator. You walk right into the clothes section and wade through all sizes and types. Although they look good, I'm not really quite into the styles they have here and so tend to stray a little to the right where they have the bags. Depending on your lucky stars, you might find a good handbag for an even better price. You can spend a bit of time here as the selection is quite broad and eclectic. There's no method in the arrangement and so you have to go one on one and check them all out. However, this time around I found all the tan and shades of brown together and couldn't make up my mind.

Gifts for you and me

The next section is the skincare and body products which are quite unlike any you'll see in Kmart or Target or even Priceline. They have shampoos with matching conditioners, gift-wrapped soap bars, moisturisers, bath salts, body lotions, scrubs, bath bombs, and more. What I like is that they mostly come in bottles and cans and this appeals to me because I've been on this plastic-free mission for a while now and it's going rather well. And the prices just blow you away and not in a bad way. There are about three little shelves with aisles among them that you can wander around and look at things.

I found a bottle of body lotion for $3 and it even claimed to have organic constituents. To my surprise, I found it came all the way from Spain. It has served me well so far and I hope I can find a refill when I run out. But that's the whole problem with this store; they cannot promise to have the same products for you every single time. The good thing about that is you'll make happy little discoveries each time you visit but the flip side is getting attached to something and then being disappointed when you can't find it ever again. The place is also great for gift ideas as almost everything comes gaily wrapped and bow-tied. I was racking my brains to remember upcoming birthdays and then got a couple of jars of citrus bath salts just in case.

Great storage ideas

The real treasures are at the very back of the store. That's where the household wares are located, and they come from all over the world. They have flower vases, photo frames, baskets, dinnerware, cookware, gourmet food, table linen, laundry baskets, rugs, and more. These are mostly sourced from Europe and that's probably why they're so unique and not usually found elsewhere. This is where I found some cute plastic-free storage items, including wicker cutlery storage and a metal knickknack holder.

Then there was this large charming metal basin with a curvy handle that said 'potatoes' on its belly that I couldn't resist. I don't usually store that many potatoes and so will probably use it to store snacks packets or soak my feet. Here's a tip if you don't know it already; at the end of every aisle you'll find stuff on clearance for ridiculously low prices. Although most of it isn't that great, now and then you'll come across something quaint and pretty if not actually useful. So, like I said, TK Maxx is all about being on a treasure hunt and that's a shopping experience on the edge.
