During yet another family bike ride, this time along the Dandenong Creek trail we came across the well maintained Tirhatuan wetlands and playground that's worth a mention for anyone searching for a new place to take the kids or a beloved pooch.

Tirhatuan Park goes mostly under the radar when doing a Google search, which is surprising given its a 20 hectare park within natural surrounds and includes two lakes, a wetland, boardwalk, playground, BBQ area, a huge fully enclosed off leash area for dogs, and plenty of room to run around, play a game of footy, fly kites, look for birds, frogs and insects in the wetlands or make use of the walking and bicycle trails.

The playground is split into separate zones with a wooden boat theme on one side with slides, swings, fireman's pole, ladders and other equipment suited to pre - school aged children. On the other side of the walkway is a sand pit with digger and behind that is a high climbing net, flying fox, taller slides, swings and other play equipment most suited to children aged 5 - 10 years old.

Picnic and BBQ facilities are excellent with plenty of tables in the shade and also underneath 4 separate pergolas including the 'butterfly' shelter and one overlooking the wetlands area. There are 3 electric BBQ' for use and water taps.

Tirhatuan Park and playground is accessible from the sealed Dandenong Creek bike/walking trail or via Kriegel Way in Dandenong North.

Facilities include: BBQs, disabled access, a large car park, toilets, walking tracks, bike track, wetlands area, BBQ's, picnic tables and shelters, playground and off leash area.

For anyone who isn't familiar with the Dandenong Creek trail, it's a mostly sealed walking and cycling trail that follows the Dandenong Creek all the way from Kilsyth South to beachside Carrum and totals a distance of 44 kilometres one way. A good
site to have a look at with plenty of pictures along the trail can be [LINK=http://www.warbla.com/DandyCreekRide.htm]viewed

I recommend taking the kids scooters or bikes along and following the Dandenong Creek trail away from the city as it's one of the prettiest parts of the trail as it overlooks the creek and is surrounded by trees. There are seats and picnic tables located along the creek side and a few playgrounds depending how far you go. After a good bike ride return to the car and enjoy a BBQ lunch at the Tirhatuan park. Enjoy!
