I love Op-shops. I love the smell, I love the atmosphere and boy, do I love the bargains! I know many people who don't share my love for second hand treasures though. Personally, I just don't think their doing it right.

Next time you head down to your local Vinnies, just keep these simple tips in mind and you'll be an "Op-Shopper" in no time!

Trial and error is the key to any successful op-shopping trip. In order to find a piece of second hand goodness that you absolutely love, you have to kiss a few frogs first. The sizing and styles are obviously going to vary compared to most clothing retailers so make sure you try everything on! Don't get disheartened if the first piece doesn't fit or doesn't really suit you, there are plenty more fish in the sea.

Quality control is another essential part of succeeding in the op-shopping realm. Before you consider a purchase, check the fabric (is it getting thin?), the stitching and for stains. Also consider the quality of the brand. A second-hand top from Target is obviously not going to be worth as much as one from Stella McCartney.

So, you really love the item but it is the wrong size, wrong style or damaged? Can you fix it? Hemming, replacing buttons or taking in the waist are all alterations that you can easily be made at home. If the item has a tear that is not in the seam, needs a new zip or is too small, steer clear of it, the cost of getting it repaired is probably far more than the actual piece cost originally.

Next time you walk past an Op-Shop, go in. You'll never know what bargains you could find unless you give it a try.
