It's September, and I know so many students are currently in the same position I was in a year ago. The prospect of starting university is really exciting, but incredibly daunting.

1. If you don't get on with your flatmates, don't panic. Aim to make a friendship with them when you move in, but if it doesn't work out, do not worry. You will meet so many other like-minded people, that it won't matter if your flatmates and you don't quite click.

2. Get involved. Ignore the anxiety and don't worry about making a total fool of yourself, so many others will be feeling just as anxious and fretting about socialising too. Now is your chance to find an army of like-minded friends!

3. Fresher's Week isn't the 'be all and end all' of your university experience. My Fresher's Week wasn't amazing, but the rest of the year was incredible. This was because I had properly settled in and made established friendships by then, where as I'd been completely out on a limb during Fresher's Week.

4. Stay healthy. Cook for yourself, go for a walk or two or even try out a new sport. Becoming an independent, university student is a golden opportunity to be as unhealthy as you like, but after 6 weeks of eating nothing but fish fingers, you'll start to want to take care of yourself a little bit more.

5. Relax. The first year isn't vital when it comes to marks towards your degree, but keep up with the reading. Be open to new ideas, and what's more, this is your chance to really be yourself and explore parts of your personality you probably never knew existed.
