Tippler's Tap in Newstead has always been one of my favourite places in Brisbane to relax and have a bite to eat. I ordered the same thing every time - a basket of 'Tippler's Chicken Wings', dry spice-rubbed chicken wings with a blue cheese sauce, for only $10! These are probably the best dry wings I've tasted in Brisbane, and if you compare the prices to KFC's wicked wings ($9.75 for 10 wings), Tippler's Tap actually has a better value for money. Who would've thought restaurants have better deals than fast food chains?
Tippler's Chicken Wings (with blue cheese sauce) and chilli (beer-battered) fries with 'Grandma Kennedy's Chilli', sour cream, cheese and chives. Yum!
I cannot stress enough how good their chicken wings are, so here is another photo of them in all their glory. As a side note, I love cheese as much as the next person but am not too keen on blue cheese, however, Tippler's Tap has heaps of other sauces to choose from. I usually go for Sriracha, a chilli sauce made from a paste of chilli peppers, distilled vinegar, garlic, sugar, and salt - thanks Wikipedia.
I was devastated to find out that Tippler's Tap was closing down, only to realise they weren't closing, just relocating. Phew! I wasn't sure how I felt about the relocation. They were previously near Gasworks, meaning that there was plenty of parking, which, as a bonus, was free for the first 2 hours. Their new location is at South Bank. Although it is more convenient by public transport, I tend to drive everywhere seeing as I live on the southside and study/work on the northside. South Bank is notoriously hard for finding a decent street park, but I told myself that this cannot stop me from getting my Tipper's Chicken Wings.
Poor Eddy could only smell the wings and go without - I gave him plenty of treats to compensate for missing out!
As I expected, it proved insanely hard to find a park on Grey Street. However, because I had predicted this would happen, I had a back up plan. Booking online prior to your arrival means you can save big bucks on your parking - if you visit South Bank/Brisbane CBD in the evening, you can park at a flat rate from $4 up. As a general rule of thumb, the further you are willing to walk, the cheaper it'll be - good to save some money and get some exercise in at the same time. South Bank is lovely at night!
Aside from parking, I was also worried about an increase in price. I assume the rent in South Bank would be more than in Gasworks, and it's fair game if the owners decide to up the prices in order to combat this. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the chicken wings only increased by $2, making it $12 for a basket. They also added an option so that you can get a half basket for $6, which is something that wasn't available back in Newstead. Another great change is that there are more seats available. Back in the day, finding a seat proved quite difficult; now, there is plenty to go round.
Here are some photos of their new location:
Outdoor seating at Tippler's Tap South Bank - so glad they kept this piece of art from when they were at Newstead!
Tippler's Tap also has an extensive drinks menu, from standard bottles to a wide selection of beers on tap. There are also beer tasting paddles for the keen beer enthusiast. These can all be ordered at the bar.
Overall, although I was initially sad about the relocation, I think it's a good change. They can now accommodate a larger number of people, and hopefully gain more exposure too, being smack bang in the middle of South Bank, Brisbane's premier lifestyle and cultural destination, famous for its nightlife. It used to be hidden in the backstreets of Newstead — I remember having to use GPS in order to get there, the first couple times I went. The quality of food hasn't changed, and for the most part, the prices haven't either. Tippler's Tap will remain one of my favourite eateries in Brisbane, and I will always recommend it to to friends due to its friendly staff, great atmosphere and, of course, great food.
The Gas Works site and model was a winner, pity they thought the need to become main stream. Now they will become just another craft beer outlet in the southbank hub! Looks like Green Beacon and Newstead Brewery will be the winners. So long Tippliers Tap irrespective how good your chicken wings are!
