A musical comedy as part of the Bris Funny Fest
As an unrefined Armchair Critic when I am asked if I enjoyed a performance or a show I refer to the "next morning rule". A bit like the three-second rule when you drop your cheesecake on the floor only longer.
So yesterday morning, after having viewed a performance of Eric Tinker's Tinkerings at The Heya Bar in Fortitude Valley the previous evening, I found myself mopping the floor to one of the high points of the show. The daughters just may have been shocked had they witnessed their mothers twerking and singing, loud enough for the neighbours to hear, to Tinker's "Never Smile at a Pedophile".
Tinkerings is just one of the performances that form this year's Bris Funny Fest. This festival is an independent, volunteer-run comedy festival based in Brisbane that showcases the talents of up and coming performers and is modelled on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
After greeting the crowd with a Dad Joke in the form of an Elton John standard we discovered that Tinkerings showcases original comedy songs, covers and rewritten lyrics of pop standards. Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart is an old favourite which gets "tinkered" with to become The Zombie Apocalypse and poor old Maggie Thatcher gets done over too.
The next and final performance of Tinkerings as part of this Festival will be on Thursday, 22nd of August. Commencing at 6pm it is a fast-paced and breezy performance and at only an hour in duration is fun pre-dinner entertainment. Grab the Squeeze and make it Date Night.
Tickets are available here, and cost $18 for Adults and $12 for Concessions. Note that this is for 18 years and over only. And be prepared for the Dad jokes and puns: it was just like watching my Uncles after a big lunch on Christmas Day. They were good fun too.
The Heya Bar is located at 351 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, and is open for food (Street Eats) and drinks from 5pm for all weekday shows and 2:30pm for Saturday and Sunday shows.
