Some people have fears about going to cemeteries, but they are fascinating places to explore. One that is not intimidating is at the Heritage Listed Tingalpa Pioneer Chapel and Cemetery on Wynnum Road at Tingalpa. It is a small cemetery with a chapel which is available and frequently used for weddings.

The timber church was built in 1886, which replaced the original church built in 1868 and destroyed by a cyclone in 1885. It was the first Anglican Church between Kangaroo Point and Moreton Bay. There is much written about the history of the church and the area which you can read here.

The Chapel, cemetery and grounds are kept in pristine condition by volunteers from The Friends of the Tingalpa Cemetery Group, which was formed in 2002.

A walk around the grounds and the reading of the headstones and plaques erected will give you information and stories about the people that lived and died in the area from the early days of settlement. It is touching to read the headstones of children who died, especially where there was more than one death in a family. Life was not easy in those times.

One plaque that I found interesting was on of graveside of Richard Thomas Jefferies, (1841 – 1920) who was a musician, born in England in 1841, who died in 1920. He is regarded as "the father of music in Brisbane". You can read more about him here

The chapel and grounds are kept clean and tidy – and well worth a visit. You might contact The Friends of The Tingalpa Cemetery Group to see if you can visit when the volunteers are working there, as I know they would be happy to show you around, and you may be able to see inside the chapel. For details about the group click here.

Also if the volunteers are at work you may be able to park inside the grounds as otherwise you may need a short walk from safe parking.
