I love the arts and creativity. My early career was in teaching, writing, producing and directing for film, theatre, comedy and improv shows. Now I'm a professional creative content producer, mostly on digital platforms.

When there's nothing doing, step back in time

It's exciting, it's fun, it's entertaining and immersive and it's coming back to Brisbane this May. The Time Travel Café is a unique experience – even if you attend it more than once! This isn't your dusty old theatre experience. It's an event where you become part of the action, almost as if you've stepped inside a movie.
As you enter the café, you are transported back in time…but there's a problem. The time streams are crossing over each other. A variety of fascinating characters from a range of eras are all there. It would be ruining the surprise to reveal who you'll meet, though you may be able to guess from some of the photos.
Performer Brie Jurss - can you guess who she's playing?
You're invited to interact with the five characters in this semi-improvised, semi-scripted form of entertainment. Don't worry if you're shy; you need only interact as much as you're comfortable. Nobody pressures you to interact if you don't want to at all.
Wayne Jennings plays one of the five historical characters you'll meet
At times the characters will break away from the guests and perform scripted pieces and musical numbers. You'll be impressed with their skill and dedication to their craft. It's amazing how well they all stay focussed and in character for the sixty-minute experience.
It's tricky to pin down a genre for the show. There's comedy, drama, music, and romance all wrapped up in a surreal bow. The action takes place over several rooms, so it's up to you how much time you spend with each character. It also means no two visits to the show will ever be the same. Also, you will miss seeing some of the things going on in other rooms. That's part of the whole adventure, and you can always attend more than once.
The licensed bar serves fun cocktails with time travel related names like The DeLorean. Another fun element is the décor throughout the venue, which, being an old Tailor Shop in Woolloongabba, has a lot of character already. It's so rich and detailed, full of artifacts and tasteful furnishings. It has the feeling of the conservatory of a British Victorian-era explorer.
