Melburnians were bowled over by a RONE Exhibition Time in their iconic Flinders Street Station. Now it's Perth's TIME.

RONE is happy to announce that TIME is moving to the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) for a limited season. TIME is set across 12 rooms in the Historic Centenary Galleries, with expanded staging and a new exclusive room created as a response to the space.

As RONE says "AGWA has given me an incredible opportunity to work in Centenary Galleries, which have not been fully opened in nearly 20 years. This is a dream of mine as I’ve been captivated by this building for many years."

RONE's TIME opens 1 July - 30 September 2024. Tickets are available to the public for timed sessions, commencing on Monday 1 July 2024.

WHO IS RONE
RONE (Tyrone Wright) is arguably Australia's most commercially successful street artist. His large-scale wall paintings are often of hauntingly beautiful female faces and can be found all over the world. On walls, yes, but often in galleries such as the National Gallery of Australia and the NGV, and have been shown by galleries in London, Berlin, and New York.

Many will already know of his giant-scale mural activating Hibernian Place and Hay Street

THEME
Impermanence is one of the themes of RONE's Time. According to a quote by RONE for Design Files, when asked about his creation of ephemeral female faces. 'As the 'Jane Doe' murals aged on the street, they would be torn or start to fall apart, and that's when they were at their most powerful; when you could see the beauty just hanging in there. Ever since I've been exploring the juxtaposition between beauty and decay.'This is why RONE often works in abandoned or condemned buildings. While the public cries out about the destruction of such beautiful artwork, RONE does not. Because he explores the intersection of beauty and decay, the nature of loss and transcience, nothing lasts forever.

WALKING INTO TIME
Each room has been reinstated as if it was in a Miss Haversham-style time capsule. Think festooned with cobwebs and ripped curtains. And in each room is the haunting, beautiful face of the same woman who seems to meet your gaze. Beauty and the Beast of Decay. Reminders of life and death.

No matter your age, you will gain something from seeing this installation. There are so many details that there are multiple entry points to engage with, and you are expected to include your own stories and memories as well.

The old typing pools, the sewing room, and the office rooms are filled with catalogue drawers and pigeon holes for mail. Those who lived through the era of those who love vintage will be obsessed with this exhibition.

The installations are a testament to recycling and thrifting.RONE's team combed Marketplace, op shops, and vintage markets. While it looks like the objects have been there forever, everything is imagined and sourced. Where certain items couldn't be found, they were crafted, such as some of the desks in the classroom.

TIME IS MULTISENSORY
This is much more than simply seeing the creations. Sound and light play a huge part. The haunting music is by sound composer Nick Batterham. Towards the end of Batterham's 12-minute loop, a cascade of dimming lights travels through the entire third-floor corridor and delivers an awe-inspiring moment. Every once in a while, you hear a train. You can also see the trains from the window as you are above the platforms. But the train sounds are part of the soundscape. Desk lamps in the Typing Pool flicker in and out, moving visitors from one desk to the next. RONE'S team involved more than 120 creatives and professionals.

THE BEAUTY IS IN THE DETAIL
Don't rush through. Unlike other art installations, you become part of the experience as you can wander where you will. Stop now and then to note the perfectly positioned details placed to capture your thoughts. On one of the sheets in the typewriters, the typist has written, "Over the last hundred and seven days and thirty-two minutes, I have found working for the Australian Transport Group little and dirty."

The old newspapers that line the windows were chosen on purpose. The ones of a beautiful young Queen Elizabeth so on theme reminding us of youthfulness, ageing and loss.
