UPDATE: The Timbre Cafe has ceased operations as of October 02, 2013.

Every now and then it's refreshing to stumble upon a café that is understated and focuses on delivering value-for-money food and coffee in a community-friendly space. Timbre Café does just that. And to top it off they are a not-for-profit community café that supports community development projects locally and globally.

Timbre Café is partnered with the Kigamboni Community Centre in Tanzania, Africa. The partnership came about after two of Timbre Cafe's board members, Nikki and Mark, visited the Community Centre during a trip to Tanzania in mid-2012. The pair were so impressed and inspired by the work being done at the Community Centre, they felt they needed to support it in some capacity.

For those who are musically uneducated (like myself), 'Timbre' is pronounced 'tom-bre' and refers to a distinct sound within complex noise. The term serves as a metaphor for the café – offering something unique in Sydney's café scene. Timbre Café has a relaxed, airy and sun-lit feel. I am also a big fan of the quirky mismatching furniture.

The food at Timbre Café is wholesome; with everything made on site. Their coffee is a unique blend made especially for the café. The coffee is decent and very reasonably priced at $2.50 for an Espresso, $3.00-$3.50 for a Cappuccino, Latte or Flat white, and $4.00 for a Mocha. Timbre Café rewards its loyal customers with a free coffee for every seven coffees purchased.

Timbre Café is children-friendly. Their Kids Menu features a Cheese toastie ($2), Egg 'n soldiers ($3) and Fish fingers & chips ($5). The cafe also offers an All-day Breakfast Menu and free Wi-Fi.

Every Wednesday (from about 12:30pm) Timbre Café do a Wednesday Roast for $10 a plate. The roast changes from week to week so you may be enjoying roast lamb, chicken or beef.
During this visit, my friend feasted on roast chicken with a side of roasted pumpkin and potatoes, green beans and a cob of corn. The roast chicken was nice and moist (Yes – I sampled my friend's food) and it was the perfect dish to tuck into on a cold Winter's day.

I tried the tasty Timbre Chicken Sandwich with grilled chicken breast, baby spinach, tomato, cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce and aioli ($11). I also spoiled myself with a banana and choc-chip muffin (a little on the dense-side…but great flavours).

So if you're in the Bondi Junction area, why not grab a coffee or enjoy lunch with your friends, family or colleagues at Timbre Café? And while you're there, give yourself a pat on the back for also supporting a great cause.
