What started as a humble Hong Kong hole-in-the-wall eatery has now gained entry in the Michelin Guide. And, you can savour its traditional yum cha menu right here in Melbourne. Tim Ho Wan is conveniently located at 206 Bourke Street and open from 10am to 9pm every day including public holidays, although a surcharge does apply.

BBQ pork buns

The world-renowned BBQ pork buns are a treat all on their own. They are golden, crispy and baked to perfection. Their BBQ pork filling is simply delicious. I'm told that these are the number one most ordered item on the menu. So, definitely a must-try.

Pork dumplings with shrimp

A variety of steamed dumplings are available, cooked to order, so that their flavour and texture are retained. We ordered the classic siu mai (pork dumplings with shrimp) and were not disappointed - plump, juicy and very satisfying. We also ordered the fried radish cake which was listed as a monthly special on the menu. Other specials include gold-dusted charcoal buns, fried Chinese donut with prawns, salt and pepper deep-fried mushrooms, and more.

For dessert, we could not go past the mango sago pomelo and black glutinous rice. The rice was served warm with coconut milk. Although delicious, there was a tad too little coconut milk in our opinion. The mango sago pomelo, on the other hand, was just perfection in a bowl wrapping up the meal beautifully.

Tim Ho Wan is undoubtedly one of the best yum cha spots in the city. For further information, head to www.timhowanaustralia.com.au or follow them on Facebook .
