The Tim and Gina Fairfax Discovery Centre is a groundbreaking new space where children aged 0-6 years can explore Australian history through storytelling and play, building a lifelong love of museums in the process.
Children and their carers can explore a large, inclusive play area with a variety of experiences on offer. There is a soft crawl space for infants and five separate spaces with hands-on activities featuring Australian animal stories.
Children can follow the journey of Chris, the world's woolliest sheep who was lost in the bush for 5 years. They can wander through the bush maze and squeeze through woolly rollers before sliding down the shearing chute and onto the next adventure.
Learn the Torres Strait Island creation story of Gelam, the boy who transformed into a dugong, and help baby turtles make the hazardous journey from their nests to the ocean.
Sit on the ocean floor and watch as different sea creatures swim past. Build a fish trap or collect and sort shells before your next nautical adventure - with Trim the cat, who sailed around Australia with Matthew Flinders. Here, you'll find ropes to climb, a wheelchair-accessible rocking deck, telescopes, a ship's wheel and an upper deck to explore.
The bunyip is a legendary Australian creature. In the billabong, children can dress up with tails, wings, fins, scales and furs and become their own mythical creature. Frolic under the big trees, watch the shadowy projections and listen to the sounds of the water, frogs and animals.
In our quiet reading area, snuggle up and pretend to be a joey in a soft, warm pouch. Choose books from our library or listen to the story of Wambuwuny the grey kangaroo. The space includes three large pods, a grassland bunker and a secret nook.
For those who love the idea of a fun and educational play space that is accessible for a variety of visitors, becoming a Friends member is the best way to enjoy the space, with free entry* for the life of a paid membership.
