Tikka Take is a casual Indian restaurant located in
Take/@-35.276345,149.132075,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x28a374189e23ba79!8m2!3d-35.276345!4d149.132075 Genge Street , just off the main Bunda Street that runs through the city centre. It is a restaurant which you can smell before you see, as you walk by and wonder where that
amazing Indian curry smell is coming from and your nose leads you to the door. At the front entrance there is a large and extensive photo menu board with a wide range of Indian meals and street food options to choose from. It is a casual eatery that you can enjoy with family or friends, however you could easily walk in on your own and order a curry and rice for an affordable $12.50.
What our family enjoys about this casual eatery is that it is relaxed, has friendly service, the smells are divine and the food is even better. Although it is a venue that is busy with couples and groups of friends of all ages, it is particularly family-friendly with crayons, plastic dinnerware and mild dishes on the menu, for kids to experience new flavours and delicacies. Judging by how many families we see on our lunch-time visits, it's a hit with all ages.
When you first walk into the restaurant, the high ceilings, wood panelling, colourful graphics and open kitchen catches your eye, before you take a seat and start pouring over the menu. When you have decided what you want, you then write down your order on the paper provided and press the button on your table (which the kids love to do). Within minutes a friendly staff member comes to collect your order, check any details and then you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the music and ambience of this welcoming and warm venue.
Our family have visited this eatery many times and each time we have chosen something new to try. Some days it has been a chai tea to warm up the insides, or a small dish on the side to complement the curry - everything we have tried has had the "wow" factor. As we dine with our young daughter, there are always three items that we order as they are mild and tasty and suitable for children - the
Butter Chicken, Chicken Korma and a side of
Garlic Naan. The staff members have all recommended the
Butter Chicken and
Korma for kids as they don't have any chilli and it is suitably mild. Another popular dish for kids is the
Cheesy Naan Dippers served with Butter Chicken gravy on the side, to dip the naan into.
These are the dishes that suit our family, however there are endless options on the menu - from mild to spicy and everything in between. See the full menu
here , which includes an extensive drinks list from the bar with a variety of international beers, ciders and wines to compliment your meal.
Canberra is a
family friendly city, with a wide range of options to choose from for lunch or dinner, however if your children enjoy food with some international flavour - you can't go past Tikka Take. Unlike many other Indian restaurants, this eatery is casual and focuses on street food and roadside favourites from different areas of India. It is also enjoyed by everyone who happens to walk by - uni students, families, couples and groups of friends - with many groups ordering up big and sharing the dishes in the middle of the table. Just like
Mookie burgers down the road and
Zeus Street Greek next door, it is a casual lunch or dinner eatery to pop in for a tasty meal, whilst out enjoying the attractions of the city.
Why not stand at the door and look at the long and delicious menu and see what you would order? Once you stand there and smell the Indian flavours coming from the kitchen, I can almost guarantee that you won't walk away.
