The magnificent Sumatran Tigers are back at Taronga Zoo and being able to see them so close up is amazing. The new Tiger Trek immersive experience allows you to travel to Indonesia without leaving Sydney. Your journey begins by boarding a "flight" to Sumatra and being transported to the beautiful forests of Ways Kambas National Park.
After strolling through an Indonesian marketplace, you arrive at the area the tigers now call home. There are four magnificent creatures to admire, Clarence, a four-year-old male, Jumilah, a fourteen-year-old female and Kartika and Kembali her six-year-old cubs. They were very active and seemed just as curious about us as we were about them.
But it was Kartika who impressed as she bound with ease from crate to crate in her area then surprised an unsuspecting group of young ones by leaping up onto the bonnet of the jeep they were sitting in within the enclosure. It was fun listening to the squeals from inside as the kids peered out of the windows to check just where she was.
The exhibit is both informative and interesting with a rainforest trail, identification charts, smart app for families and volunteers on hand to answer any questions. Visitors will also learn about the impact of deforestation, see the devastating results of poaching and learn how simple shopping choices can help and preserve the estimated 400 Sumatran Tigers that remain in the wild. The entire experience is very enjoyable and as you exit Tiger Trek you not only leave in awe of these beautiful animals but appreciative of Taronga's wonderful conservation program.
