Nestled in the quiet backstreets of Paddington, Tiger Mottle is an unassuming café that blends into its suburban surroundings. With its wooden floors, fireplaces and flowers, it feels more like a cosy living room than café.

Small and low yet surprisingly comfortable stools are available out front for those who prefer to people watch, or you can sit at a high bench near the coffee bar inside or at tables in the main room. There are also a couple of tables in the small area out the back.

The menu offers a creative twist to breakfast and lunch regulars. Using the freshest organic produce, meals here have a rustic taste. The Billy's Bubble and Squeak ($15) made up of sautéed cabbage, bacon, potato and peas topped with poached eggs and parmesan, is a breakfast favourite here, or for lunch try the smoked ocean trout, tomato salsa, goat's cheese, roast beetroot, avocado and aioli grilled flatbread sandwich ($12.50).

If nothing on the menu takes your fancy you can always be inspired by their specials displayed on the blackboard. On this particular day a double smoked ham, artichoke, bocconcini and onion jam omelette ($15) and poached eggs on toast with smoked kingfish, roast tomatoes, spanish onion and pesto ($16.50).

The double ristretto, a double shot of coffee poured at the same length as a single shot, is used as base coffee here. Along with the usual suspects they offer an original signature coffee which they call the maple mottle, consisting of a double ristretto poured over cream, followed by a shot of maple syrup with a dusting of chilli and then finally a decadent topping of chocolate shavings ($3.00). Coffee aficionados will not be disappointed.

It was difficult not to be seduced by the aroma of ginger bread ($4) as it came out of the oven. Served with two slices and an optional (and highly recommended) side of yoghurt with maple syrup (an extra $1), which gently smoothes down the potent taste of the ginger, this is a perfect treat at any time of the day.

It is easy to spend hours lazing and chatting away in this home away from home café. If you come on a weekday you might even get a shot at the outdoor window stools.
