While enjoying one of the GCCC Holiday activities - the "Have A Go Circus" (which was really good), we made another chance discovery. Close by was a Tie Dye activity stand (another offering from GCCC ). It presented the opportunity to tie dye an item of clothing (you bring with) or one of the items provided, such as a pillow case (small charge). It looked like a great idea so we popped home to pick up white t-shirts and shorts. For just $6 an item, we were free to Tie Dye to our hearts content. The activity leader, Shoshana, was great. Her enthusiasm was infectious and my girls had a fun time.

The colour choice was entirely your own and the swirl pattern was created by taking hold of a piece of fabric in the centre of the shirt and twisting round until it resembled a pizza scroll or Danish pastry. Once rolled into a circle you put 3 elastic bands around it, crossing them over each other in the centre.

You now have triangular segments which you paint different colours, using the bands as section indicators. Once all the white has been coloured, it gets flipped over and you paint the sections the same colours on the reverse side. Unless you have an hour or so to picnic at the park, and thus dry your shirt in the sun, you take your creation away damp, wrapped in a plastic bag. Once home you take off the bands, gasp in admiration as your masterpiece is revealed and lay it on the grass in hot sun to dry. It needs turned over every 5 or 10 minutes, as the UV light brings out the brightness in the colours and you want both sides to be just as bright.

The Tie Dye activity is on the GCCC holiday program for January. For Dates, times & venues, view the schedule or visit Shoshana's Facebook page . This Tie Dye activity is also available at the weekly Burleigh Markets .

What a creative party idea this is. Shoshana brings everything you need and you supply up to 2 white items per child and a min of 8 kids. The cost is $10 per child. If readers quote the "Weekend Notes Tie Dye article by Susan Jackson", your child will be free, so your minimum number is 7. Shoshana is a good communicator who connects easily and enthusiastically with kids, so if you were wondering what to do for your next party give her a call, your solution may be a Tie Dye party. I think the mums would be eager to have a turn too.
