I never imagined being at a disco at 10.30. You might think that sounds strange until I explain that I mean 10.30 a.m. not p.m. But that's where I found myself, with my two children, a few weeks ago.
Tiddlywinks, in Nundah, run a disco for kids at least twice a day, five days a week, and it's actually really good. With the hot Queensland temperatures making it tricky to play outside in the middle of the day during the summer, Tiddlywinks provides an air conditioned haven where the kids can let off steam.
The Play Cafe is clean and smart with a bold castle theme throughout. There are plenty of tables and chairs next to the play zones so it's easy to watch your children and enjoy a coffee at the same time. It would be an ideal place for Mothers Groups to meet. There are plenty of IKEA high chairs which looked clean and inviting to use when we visited. All of the toys and play areas are cleaned and disinfected daily - this makes it a much more relaxing environment than some of the other playcentres.
The over 3s zone has a 3-lane bumpy slide with sacks that the kids can sit in to go extra fast, as well as a ball fountain and a 3-level play structure. Wiggles fans will enjoy the cave with dry ice and Wiggles videos playing to dance along to.
At 10.30am and 12.00pm the famous disco starts. It is well run and my 3 year old and her friends really loved it. The parents found it pretty entertaining to watch too. It is ideally suited for kids aged around 18 months to 5 years and lasts for about half an hour.
If you're hungry after all the dancing, the cafe serves a good selection of drinks and homemade snacks. We tried the chicken and cheese toasted sandwich and ham and cheese croissant, which were both very tasty although the presentation could have been improved. They also sell milk in cartons which was a healthy option for kids.
Looking for an easy birthday party venue? Tiddlywinks also runs parties which, although pricey, would be guaranteed fun whatever the weather and hassle free. For $18 per child for a midweek party ($24 at weekends) you get invitations, the use of the party room, entry to the Play Cafe and Disco and a selection of party food. However, if you have a child that is sensitive to food colourings, you may want to give the neon green and pink icecream cake a miss.
