Planning a road trip? Tiaro is another one of those small rural towns, situated on the Bruce Highway 230 kilometres north of Brisbane and a little short of 30 kilometres south of Maryborough, making it the perfect spot when you need to stretch the legs whilst undertaking a road trip.
Another reason for stopping is the
Tiaro Craft Cottage & Tourist Information Centre on Mayne Street, which passes right through the middle of town. Manned by knowledgable volunteers the Craft Cottage is an Aladdin's Cave of handcrafted goodies including soft toys, wooden platters, and an array of delightful homemade jams and marmalades, including a Banana Jam which I just had to sample. One industrious local gentleman has even authored several children's books if shopping for Little People is your thing. I just had to grab the Bronco's Booties.
Tiaro Craft Cottage is open 7 days a week from 9am until 4:30pm and also includes brochures and maps for travellers focussing on the Fraser Coast.
Next door to this centre is the Tiaro Memorial Park where you can utilise the bathroom facilities, make use of the electric barbecues and picnic equipment, and let the kiddies loose on the playground to burn off some energy. At the back of the park is an area popular with the Grey Nomads, as it allows free camping for between 12 to 15 caravans or mobile homes stopping overnight.
Next door to the Craft Cottage and overlooking the Memorial Park is an area that features an oversized statue of the Mary River Turtle and information about the Queensland Lung Fish and the natural environment.
Yes, Tiaro is a good place to stretch the legs. I even started my Christmas shopping at the Tiaro Craft Cottage and Tourist Information Centre.
