Uh, it was actually my intention to merely plug Tia's gig at the Brisbane Festival, then gorge on potato chips. But with a number of shows in the pipeline, awesome new EP 'Status Anxiety', not to mention a young, intelligent artist brimming with natural talent...yeah, uh, well, I think I need to postpone my post-dessert snack supper thing and spend a few moments telling you about her.
Winner of the 2016 Indigenous Initiative for her "State of Art" collaboration with The Belligerents, dual winner of the 2017 Queensland Music Awards, and already signed to progressive American label AntiFragile, 18-year-old Brisbanite Tia Gostelow is already making waves. With emotion-packed tracks that seemingly capture the sentiment of every Australian youth, including recently released Hunger, and Strangers, Tia Gostelow is the new unofficial spokesperson for Aussie teenagers - far & wide, present & past. That is, even if you grew up in the 90's, 80's, 70's, 60's, Tia Gostello successfully captures the essence of each era, thus providing tasty treats for all.
Though a wistful, pensive, young artist, Tia is a social being through and through. Admitting, during our chat, she's not particularly fond of sitting alone, writing verses. Nevertheless, savouring the fruits of her labour - "Sometimes I find songwriting can be a chore, and sometimes I hate it, but to me when you hear the end result of the song it's the best thing ever". Elaborating, "My manager, or someone, will come up to me and say, 'Tia we need a song in the next two weeks, we need a single', and I'll come up with two maximum". Adding, "I really only ever write when I'm really feeling emotional about something". But at the end of the day, Tia "couldn't be happier with (her) team". Which not includes her label, but her parents - "My parents...I definitely owe them". Having joined forces with numerous artists over the past 12 months, such as local talent Lanks (aka Will Cuming), Tia enjoys, I daresay prefers, collaborating. And has done so successfully. Commenting, "Personally, I love co-writing with people". And given the willingness of the others, the feeling obviously mutual.
