Release your inner storyteller - but please keep it clean
Author Robin Moore once said "Inside each of us is a natural-born storyteller, waiting to be released." Everyone has a story. I like to think that long hot summer days coupled with the constant coverage of cricket on television make the ideal conditions to share a story.

The Stringybark Short Story Award 2022 is open for entries until the 13th of February, 2022. This means plenty of time to sharpen the pencils and dust off the Word Processor to write a short fiction story, 1,500 words or less, "on any theme but which must have a link (no matter how small or inconsequential) to Australia."

Competition guidelines state: " Some reference to Australia ( is required). We don't care how small the reference is. It could be a mention of a vegemite sandwich or the fact that Australia is the world's biggest exporter of coal. The story could be set in Australia or have an Australian in it. We don't mind. Even a discussion of the mating habits of drop bears is quite okay with us."

Last year's Open Themed Short Story Competition included some fascinating tales ranging from convicts, bushrangers and gold prospecting with a selection of entries published in an anthology with the title Golah Sing.

This competition is open to Australian and international authors of all skill levels. All judging is done blind, which means that it's the writing that will be judged and not the writer's reputation.

Stringybark Stories have been sponsoring writing competitions since 2010 and as a result, thirty-six short story anthologies containing winning and highly commended entries have been published.

Yes, there is an Entry Fee:

One story - A$14.00
Two stories - A$26.00
Three stories - A$36.00

Do you know why animals don't make good storytellers?

They only have one tail.
