See contemporary modern dance at its best
The Australasian Dance Collective will feature the works of a trio of modern dance choreographers in THREE on 1 July 2022 at the Redlands Performing Arts Centre.
THREE showcases the exhilarating and groundbreaking performances created by the very talented Jack Lister, Melanie Lane, and Hofesh Shechter. The pieces being performed are:
Alterum by Melanie Lane takes the audience to a universe beyond our natural world.
Still Life by Brisbane's Jack Lister is inspired by the artworks of the 16th and 17th-century Memento Mori movement to consider themes of our own mortality, the beauty in decay and our relationship with time.
Cult[, by Israeli-born, London-based Shechter is described as instinctive and raw, and presented in association with Hofesh Shechter Company.
I asked Gabrielle Nankivell, the rehearsal director of the ADC creative/artistic team, to give us insight into the production in the lead up to the shows.
How do you think the pieces complement each other while each being unique?
ADC's THREE showcases the virtuosity and versatility of the company artists with works from three distinct choreographic voices. While the physical and aesthetic language of each work has its own unique personality and atmosphere, the complete program invites the audience to consider the human condition and our desire for meaningful connection.
The works have some very powerful and thought-provoking themes which seem to be perfect for the times we are facing. Would you agree? Yes! The works touch on themes that resonate on both personal and global levels. Each audience member will experience the performance individually as a reflection of how they see the world. This offers a chance for a variety of interpretations – everything from self-reflection to moments of escapism.
What is it like for the 3 of you (Jack Lister, Melanie Lane and Hofesh Shechter) to work together?
The three works were created independently – two are new ADC commissions and one is a pre-existing work - so the choreographers all worked separately at different times. Jack Lister, whose work Still Life is part of the program, also performs in all three of the works.
For the company artists, the opportunity to encounter the three varied creative processes and perform in such different works is both challenging and rewarding. It is also a joy to bring to audiences.
What do you hope audiences will take from the performance? It's been a very long road for the company to return to the stage after the challenging times of the past few years. ADC hopes that witnessing THREE is an exhilarating return to live performance.
The show at Redlands Performing Arts Centre will be the final performance of the east coast tour of the production so be sure not to miss this unique opportunity.
Tickets to the show range from $25 - $32 and can be purchased online here.
