It was a Sunday morning around 11.30am and, as is often the case, we were chasing Sunday brunch. We rejected one cafe as it was very full, and drove along Malvern Road, Malvern until we spotted another - . It also looked pretty busy (it would be concerning if it wasn't busy at that time on a Sunday), but we decided to give it a go.

Walking into Thread, it has a good feel, and I like the slightly eclectic and funky decor. It's a good sized cafe, and there's also a courtyard out the back. There's a big share table at the front of the cafe. The lighting is good and the feel is light and open. The walls are decorated with artworks.

We were quickly offered coffees after being seated at our table. The coffees arrived in cups and saucers that didn't match - I know it's a trendy look, but not one that I particularly go for. The fact that there was coffee dribbled down the front of the cup did not add to the overall appeal. The coffees, though well made otherwise, were lukewarm. Craving that caffeine hit, we persisted with them rather than sending them back, although I'd have to say I didn't really enjoy my coffee.

The menu is quite extensive, featuring many of the standard brunch favourites. Some of the more interesting options included: Buenos dias brekky burrito with scrambled egg, mixed beans, avocado salsa, baby spinach & tomato relish ($16.50) or 'Franco's jewels' - spanish eggs poached & nested alongside spiced chorizo & feta in a herb, tomato reduction ($17).

Overall, the menu is quite strongly egg-oriented, which is unfortunate as I'm not a big egg eater. But to be fair, most cafes have a similar egg bent in their brunch offerings. So, steering away from eggs, I chose the porridge with honeyed yoghurt & spice infused poached pear ($12).

When my porridge arrived, I realised there were no spoons in the cutlery tin on the table so had to ask for one. No problem there - except the spoon I was given was a soup spoon. I probably sound particularly fussy when I say I don't really like eating breakfast cereal with a soup spoon! Blame my upbringing.

My porridge was very disappointing (not just because I was eating it with a soup spoon!). It was quite dry and the oats were too firm and undercooked. It wasn't a pleasant dish; I can make better porridge in the microwave at home. The staff should visit Crabapple Kitchen to learn how to do a good porridge.

Dave, my partner, ordered the Eggs Benedict ($17) which he quite enjoyed. It was served on an English muffin with ham, cheddar, hollandaise sauce and semi-dried tomatoes.

We finished off the meal with a second cup of coffee each - warmer this time because we mentioned we hadn't been happy with the temperature of the first round.

To be fair, I will say that the service was quite efficient despite the crowded restaurant. However, overall it was a disappointing experience and I didn't particularly enjoy the meal. I won't be rushing back.
