Australian singer/songwriter
Kate Finkelstein rocked it last night in her self-described '
Kate Bush wet dream' concert entitled
This Woman's Work, performed as part of the
Melbourne Fringe Festival . The show had previously made an appearance at
The Butterfly Club , but this time, Kate got to perform Kate with the help of a four-piece band plus backing singers.
Kate entered the stage a little tentatively, but soon had the audience engaged with her warm smile and sweet tones. I thought her first choice of song was interesting -
Rubberband Girl from
The Red Shoes album. Not necessarily one of my favourite Kate Bush songs - but what it did quickly establish was Kate Finkelstein's ability to do a successful and compelling rendition of Bush.
Finkelstein has the range and vocal dexterity necessary to successfully take on Bush's more challenging numbers, which was proven as the show progressed. I found myself singing along to some of the numbers - I didn't even know I knew the words to
The Man with the Child in his Eyes!
Taking us through the complex
Babooshka, and
This Woman's Work, Kate had by now well and truly warmed to the task, as had the audience, which, with encouragement, was singing along with gusto.
It was inevitable that
Wuthering Heights would get a run somewhere in the show, and appropriately, it was part of the finale. I doubt there was anyone in the audience NOT singing along at the point.
There were some unfortunate issues with the sound system during this show, which meant that for most of the show, the backing singers couldn't be heard. Luckily, Kate is vocally strong enough not to suffer from the lack of backing, however, it may have made for a richer overall sound.
The promotional material for the show indicated '
Australian rock royalty Brett Garsed, Gerry Pantazis, Richard Panaia and Lee Bradshaw' would form the backing band - which was a little confusing, because amongst the band was another legend; Geoff Wells, who is regularly a guitarist for Daryl Braithwaite. Wells absolutely shredded it in a few places during the show; it was a pleasure to listen to him.
One got the sense that Kate was just hitting her stride when, all too soon, the show was over. This feeling was perhaps vindicated by Kate saying '
there's a piano in the bar behind this room - I want to finish off the songs I didn't get to in this concert, see you there!'. And there she was, just a few minutes later, continuing to smash it out. And before long the whole room was singing along too. It was a sweet way to finish the night.
Anyone who loves Kate Bush's music will love
This Woman's Work. Great fun, great to sing along to, and a pleasure to see Kate Finkelstein doing something she does well and clearly loves. I know I walked out of the venue with a big smile on my face.
I'm not sure where Kate will next be performing
This Woman's Work, but surely it will be in the not too distant future, so keep an eye out!
