When attending a house party at James Franco's LA mansion, there really is nothing that could ruin it quite like a global apocalypse. A bevy of A-listers (and other listers) join an all-star cast of Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson, who play fictional versions of themselves in this crude-humour filled apocalyptic horror movie. This Is The End is an utterly bizarre and thrillingly hilarious exploration of just what it would be like for this gang of new Hollywood heavy-weights to be confronted by the end of the world. Written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, it is based on the short film 'Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse', also written and directed by Rogen and Goldberg, as well as director Jason Stone in 2007.

When Jay (Jay Baruchel) sets off to visit his best buddy and fellow actor Seth (Seth Rogen) in La La Land, he winds up getting far more than he had bargained for. After a day of debauched shenanigans, the two pals head out to your average celeb-studded house party at Mr James Franco's mansion in the Hollywood Hills. The usual lunacy and raucous antics of the famous is in full swing at the party, until catastrophe strikes. Not just any catastrophe like the flow of booze diminishing, but 'the end of the world' kind of supernatural catastrophe. Some are lucky enough to survive, some are not so lucky and face their demise in a graphic and gruesome fashion. Those that find refuge in James Franco's mansion, such as Seth, Jay, Jonah (Jonah Hill), Craig (Craig Robinson) and James (James Franco) himself, must now wait to discover their fate. Assuming that help will be ever so promptly on it's way since they are high profile individuals, they bunker down and wait it out. As time goes by, their options become more limited, their hope begins to fade and death, destruction, depravity as well as all sorts of wild other-worldly madness pervades their existence.

Much to our delight, as we waited for the movie to begin, we were lucky enough to have Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in the cinema to have a chat and introduce the movie. Needless to say, everyone was pretty excited to see him in the flesh and hear his trademark chortle live and unadulterated. I was very much giddy and like everyone else, took a few photos to remember the occasion. The zoom on the old iPhone helped me none however and it looks like it really could be anyone standing down the front of the cinema, but at least I will always know.

It's cameo-galore in This Is The End, with Michael Cera and Emma Watson getting the most screen time. I will also say that you will see young Michael Cera as I imagine you've never seen him before. Other notable cameos are Channing Tatum, Jason Segal, Rihanna and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who you may be more familiar with as 'McLovin' of Superbad fame.

Clearly this movie won't be for everyone; it's crass, gory, inappropriate, certainly not politically correct and completely outlandish. But for anyone who knows, loves and appreciates the humour and delivery provided by Seth Rogen, it's also hilarious, utterly entertaining and you should be pretty satisfied with this offering. The laughter in the cinema was coming thick and fast, and as someone that does have a very soft spot for Seth Rogen, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It takes you out of your comfort zone and pushes the boundaries of your humour and imagination. The best thing you can do is to just allow yourself to go on the ultra-wacky journey this movie valiantly endeavours to take you on.
