Every year Newcastle hosts one of the best known independent arts festivals in Australia, and it's free to attend! Ironically named This is Not Art, the festival opens the door to out-of the box, experimental and edgy creativity with heaps of events over the October long weekend starting on Thursday 3 October and taking place in over 20 venues across Newcastle. Venues range from Fort Scratchley and the United Services Club on Watt St to the Newcastle Ocean Baths.



Not just for weird or funky types, This is not Art is for everyone. It promises to fling us back into commune with our inner, artistic selves ... but more importantly gives us some great things to do in the holidays, supporting and viewing local artists and performers. There is an event schedule available on the This is Not Art website. The event kicks off on Thursday night with a launch at the Terrace Bar at 6pm although writers are welcome to attend the Introvert's Guide to Networking at 5pm at the Kensington. Then a series of performances and comedy acts will occur at various locations like the Crackhouse in the Hunter St mall. See the schedule for details.

The weekend will then explode into indie action with more performances and junkets from Newcastle Beach to the Kensington and back. Saturday brings with it a treasure trove of workshops and information for equipping any budding writer covering many genres, trivia, and more performances. Saturday also includes the National Young Writers' Paranormal Formal at The Terrace Bar at 9pm. Sunday will delight with more for stretching your brain muscles or simply to sit back and take it in including the Zine Fair, more from the Crack Theatre and the TiNA closing party featuring Electrofringe and the of course, the After Party.

Incorporated into the This is Not Art Festival is the National Young Writers Festival, the Crack Theatre Festival and Critical Animals (showcasing experimental art practices). The result is great opportunities for young writers to network, develop your skills and strut your stuff and for everyone to have a brilliant time in the process. Although the NYWF is aimed at writers 18 to 35, all are welcome to attend on a first in, first seated basis.
