A "steamtastic" festival filled with nostalgia
Whether you are a train enthusiast or not the Thirlmere Festival of Steam will certainly be one "steamy" event that you do not want to miss out on this March.

Located at the Train Works in the Thirlmere village in the picturesque Highlands, which is just a few minutes away from Picton and just under an hour drive from Sydney CBD, this family-friendly Festival will have it all and is certainly worth the trip to the countryside!

Since 1989, the popular Festival of Steam has grown to be one of Australia's premier steam train events which features a celebration of steam, nostalgia and country fair.

There will be an array of family-friendly and adult entertainment, activities, market stalls, amusement rides, displays and exhibits, parades and of course train rides.

Be enchanted by the echo of the steam whistle with the train rides that will be available throughout the Festival. There will be two steam locomotives operating and the rides will be a 50 minute steam train ride along the original Thirlmere Heritage Railway to Buxton or Picton. Steam train rides will depart frequently.

There will also be mini train rides which are perfect for the little ones as well as big kids alike!

The kids will love the array of kid activities on offer with workshops, classes and activities to learn, experience and enjoy.

Sunday (5th March) will be jam-packed with entertainment and plenty of fun things to do, see and experience with many amusement rides that will keep the whole family entertained, including an animal farm, zorb balls and segways.

There will also be a number of amusement rides operating at the Thirlmere Public School.

Grab a bargain, browse for that perfect gift or learn something new at the many market stalls, which will be showcasing a range of products, Wollondilly fresh produce, emergency services stalls, history, sport club stalls, social stalls and much more.

The Gala Street Parade is one event not to miss. It will commence from 1pm and will feature an array of colour, marching bands, performances and much more.

Music in the Park is another fun activity to enjoy. Here you will find a piece of tranquillity with the pleasant atmosphere. Bring the picnic blanket, sit back and relax with the line-up of live music performances at the Memorial Park.

If you are a car enthusiast then the Vintage Car Display is the perfect spot to admire and be in awe with the wide variety of vintage cars from all the eras or if you want to experience a different type of transport, the Helicopter Rides will certainly be one activity not to miss. There is a fee for helicopter rides.

Step back into time with the Heritage Bus Shuttle rides available which will operate between Thirlmere and Tahmoor Station for a gold coin donation.

There will be hand crafted model trains exhibiting and will feature displays through miniature worlds with detailed scenery and townships and for a historic collection, see the largest display of historic trains in New South Wales at the Trainworks Museum. Here you will discover the world of trains with interactive activities, including sound and light shows.

The Steam Machinery will feature full size and miniature steam traction engines, portable engines, fairground organ and steam truck, oil engines and pumps, while the Rails in the Garden will feature 32mm and 45mm gauge live steam locomotives and displays of Argyle Locomotive Worlds models.

If art is more your thing then the Steam Train Art displays and Jane Bennett's industrial heritage artworks will be something not to miss. Artworks can be purchased at the Festival.

There will also be a number of talks at the museum theatre for the enthauisits or people who want to widen their knowledge. While the Light Up Photography Evening will be back on again due to popular demand and it will feature an opportunity to photograph locos in steam while enjoying dinner under the stars.

There is no doubt that there is something for all interests and ages at this Festival. Scribble in the date and have the ultimate perfect day out, while you step back into time!

Parking Information:

There will be parking available at the Thirlmere Sportsground for $3 per car. Street parking is limited and there will also be road closures- see website for all information.

There will be a park and ride available at Tahmoor Train Station, where you can catch the vintage bus to Thirlmere. It departs every 15 minutes between 10am-4pm on Sunday 5th March only.
