With operations commencing in 1882, Mount Morgan soon became home to one of the most productive mines in Queensland. Gold, silver and copper totalling more than 350,000 tons were declared during its mining years. Today, the town stands as a historic site featuring some interesting attractions.

The Historical Museum houses an extensive range of relics including mining equipment, household and business objects, photographs, horse-drawn buggies and wagons, and more. There is also an exhibition of the local Indigenous community. If you'd like to delve into history, then visiting the museum is a must while you're in Mount Morgan. It can be found at 87 Morgan Street. Entry is just $6 per adult, $2 per child and $4 for students and pensioners.

More memorabilia awaits at the Railway Museum which is located together with Mount Morgan's visitor information centre in the old railway station. You'll experience how travel once was through its displays and presentations. The building itself brings you back to the late 1890s. For those needing touristy advice, the staff are more than happy to assist with maps and brochures. Public toilets are also available onsite.

Approximately two kilometres from the town centre is Number 7 Dam , a recreational spot for water lovers. Swimming, boating, sailing and fishing are all allowed here. Its picturesque views, together with BBQ and picnic facilities, make the area a popular place for family get-togethers. Children can enjoy the playground and outdoor gym equipment. There's some history related to this dam too, but I'll leave that for you to discover when you visit.

Just before arriving at Number 7 Dam, you'll see a suspension bridge over the Dee River. Although not an original, the bridge gives you a feel for the days gone by. Six unique swinging bridges are used to provide easy access from the town to the mine site. The first was constructed in the 1890s.

Between the town's two lookouts, I found Arthur Timms Lookout to be more fascinating. It is located on top of a hill close to the mine and you can actually see the mine from here. The other lookout provides a view of Mount Morgan.

Various historic buildings can also be seen around town. Do check out the beautiful State High School which was built in 1908. Simply head to the visitor information centre for a very useful mud map when you arrive. So, with all these things to see and do in Mount Morgan, be sure to pay the town a visit next time you're in the vicinity.
