Without a doubt, Lobethal is most famous for its lights during the Christmas season. Come December each year, the town turns into South Australia's epicentre of the festive spirit. It boasts one of the largest community light displays in the southern hemisphere and you are invited to come and immerse yourself in the array of events and activities. Do follow their
Facebook page for details as they are unveiled. The
Lights of Lobethal Festival is truly a testament to the local community.

At other times of the year, you're welcome to wander through the main street checking out the handful of shops along the way. A must-stop is the renowned
Lobethal Bakery which opens its doors to the public every day except Sundays. The bakery makes fresh breads, pies, pasties, sweet buns, etc. But, among all, I simply love their apple strudel, danish, scroll and turnover.

Those interested in history would be chuffed to find a couple of heritage places too. The former Lobethal Mill Complex with its chimney, early tweed mill walls, red brick loom shed and mill shop is located towards the start of Main Street. It was a major rural enterprise as well as the town's major employer. Its brand, Onkaparinga, was a household name. St John's Lutheran Church is also worth a look. Dedicated in 1845, it stands as one of the oldest churches in South Australia. Its seminary was used to train students for ministry. Other places include the institute, cinema and hop kiln.

The
Hills Sculpture Trail consists of 26 world-class sculptures across Adelaide Hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula. One of them can be found at Mill Square. Crafted by Korean-born artist Hwang Seung-Woo, the sculpture portrays blankets and textiles in connection with Lobethal's community and mill history.

If you're into bushwalking, then
Lobethal Bushland Park is yours to explore. I was there recently and the park is definitely bouncing back after the Cudlee Creek bushfire. It is a large reserve of remnant bushland and features two reservoirs. You can choose from a number of hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty. You might also want to pack a picnic and perhaps let the kids loose in the play space. The park can be found just north of the town centre.

Situated approximately 40 kilometres east of Adelaide city, Lobethal awaits your arrival next time you're looking for something to see and do in the Adelaide Hills.
