Things to See and Do at Museums in the School Holidays

Just as we spring into Spring the school holidays are back again. Whether you're a parent or a lucky grandparent, museums in Adelaide have come to your rescue with fun things to do in the school holidays.

As always History SA's three museums are well prepared with exciting activities for kids. Free with normal museum entry, they will add extra interest when you visit.

Archaeology isn't something I'd normally associate with the SA Maritime Museum - something like scuba diving or sailing seems more likely. From Monday September 28 to Friday October 9 kids can dig around a mystery shipwreck and uncover relics. Play at being an archaeologist for a day and study artefacts, use light tables, spades and brushes to build a picture of the past.

Adults who don't want to go digging can check out the newest exhibition covering WW1 on the high seas: "All the World's at Sea: A World War 1 Centenary". If you haven't had enough of shipwrecks after visiting the SA Maritime Museum, then you can find real shipwrecks not far away at Mutton Cove and Jervois Basin near the Port Loop Path .



Retro video games lovers are in for a treat at the National Motor Museum between Saturday September 26 to Sunday October 11, - take a race challenge and try your luck racing cars around the racetrack. It's fantastic fun for kids, and for many adults too. It's included in the entry price to the museum. And don't forget the free Bay to Birdwood car rally to the National Motor Museum on September 27, it's an awesome way to kick off the school holidays.

At the Migration Museum entry is always free, and you can drop in anytime during the school holidays to make and take away your own personal shadow puppets. Let the kids entertain you with their own puppet show in the theatrette or join a free workshop to meet a puppeteer, hear the stories and see a shadow puppet live in action. Please note bookings are essential for the workshops at the Migration Museum.

One of the fun things to do for kids at Semaphore is riding the steam trains on the Semaphore to Fort Glanville tourist railway. See the National Railway Museum website for details of dates and times. While you're at Fort Glanville try to see the amazing historical reenactments at the fort including canons firing, marching displays and tours.



The beautiful gardens of Carrick Hill are always a pleasure to visit, and the free story book trail is fantastic fun for kids. During the school holidays there are even more things to see and do with a delightful storytelling performance of much loved classic tale Wind in the Willows over four days. From October 7-10 a pirate school will charm and entertain kids with fun things to do including interactive games and lessons on how to be a pirate.

The Classic Jets Fighter Museum can keep your kids happy in their two hour activity sessions , but they are only available for a minimum of 10 kids. perhaps you can get a group of friends together because it sounds great fun.



The University of South Australia has an unusual program of things to do in the school holidays . Visit the Planetarium, watch space movies, or take a guided tour with an astronomy educator - the sky is your limit. Bookings essential.

The Botanic Gardens Adelaide has an absolutely awesome school holidays program , including some free things to do. Make a dream catcher, used recycled materials from the garden to make a wind chime, create some fabulous food, and listen to Aboriginal Dreaming stories. Better be quick as bookings are essential for everything but the free things to do.

If that's not enough to amuse you then take a (free) look at the Bicentennial Conservatory and see the beautiful First Creek Wetlands .

Just down the road the Art Gallery of South Australia also has fun for kids in the school holidays. You'll need to book for these in advance too, but be quick.

Don't forget to check out the school holidays program at the South Australian Museum, it was just being finalised at time of writing.



The Army Museum of South Australia doesn't have a school holidays program, but is a place that families love to visit. It's not about glorifying war, rather it honours the proud history of the army over a century of service. The Army Museum is open every Sunday afternoon, and a gold coin donation will get you in. Take the informative Keswick Barracks heritage walk while you are there.
