Katoomba is a place of the beautiful outdoors, bushwalks and scenic lookouts. Which means it's kind of… short on options when it rains. And it does rain. And become misty. If you're a couple away on a romantic weekend getaway, this is not so much of a big deal. You snuggle in, stoke up the fire and read each other hilarious excerpts from your current book. If you have a cooped-up toddler or a very bored teenager on your hands, it's a different story. Here are 5 things to do in Katoomba, even when it's raining.

** #1 - Scenic World
Violet St & Cliff Dr, Katoomba NSW 2780**

Yes, a large part of Scenic World's appeal is the views. And most of the attractions are outdoors; the Skyway, the Scenic Railway, the Sceniscender. That may sound unappealing if it's drizzling but if you head to the valley floor, you'll find yourself immersed in a rainforest, protected from the (very) heavy mist. Scenic World is almost at its most magical in wet conditions.

** #2 - Katoomba Aquatic Centre
Catalina Ave, Katoomba NSW 2780**

Katoomba Aquatic Centre is relatively affordable and you have a couple of options if you have energetic young children. There's the 25 metre indoor pool or Kids Kingdom, an indoor play area for ages 1-10. It's not flash but young kids can probably amuse themselves there for a couple of hours. Kids Kingdom is only open Monday to Friday, however, unless you book for a birthday party.

#3 - United Cinemas The Edge
225 Great Western Hwy, Katoomba NSW 2780**

You'll probably pass The Edge if you come into town from Sydney. Again, it's not flash but it does have 4 cinemas, including a giant screen, some arcade games and a small play area for little kids. In other words, it can quite easily provide a morning's entertainment, leaving you with only another 8 hours to somehow fill.
**
#4 - The Gingerbread House
56 Waratah St, Katoomba NSW 2780**

Admittedly, the Gingerbread House truly comes into its own in fine weather as there's a large outdoor area with plenty of room for kids to run around. And - fair warning - there are a lot of sweets inside the cafe, so you might want to give it a miss if that's likely to cause a toddler meltdown. But the Gingerbread House is a major destination for mothers groups in Katoomba because the staff are relaxed and very used to kids running around. At a pinch, there's a cubby house the kids can dash to if they're bored inside the cafe.

** #5 - The Cultural Centre Cafe
30 Parke St, Katoomba NSW 2780**

Like the Gingerbread House, the Cultural Centre Cafe is a destination for mothers groups. There's a lounge area where you can a) get a nice coffee and b) let your baby crawl around without worrying about them getting trampled by foot traffic. There's enough space for kids and it's usually raucous in there, so no one will be looking at you askance.
