Fremantle is one of Western Australia's biggest cultural and historical hubs. As an early settlement and penal colony, history runs rife through this port city, and better still, there's heaps of things you can do with the kids. Here's over 30 ways to keep the kids entertained in Fremantle.
Activities and Fun Things
If you haven't paid a visit to Fremantle in a couple of years, you may not have noticed the
giant tourist wheel located at Esplanade Park. The wheel is open weekdays from 12pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 10pm and Sunday from 10am to 9pm and costs $12 for adults and $10 for kids, although family passes and special couples tickets are available.
Escape Hunt Experience is a fantastic way to entertain the kids - you'll need your wits about you and your thinking cap on to solve the mystery in the given one hour, and everyone will need to do their part. It's also a great team building and communication exercise for adults.
If your kids are getting sick of the same old toys, take them to the
Fremantle Toy Library . The kids can pick and choose some 'new' toys to take home for a few weeks.
Fremantle Library also has a heap of things for kids too, including story time, rhyme time, reading rewards and lots more.
If you've got artsy kids, the
Fremantle Arts Centre or
Inkling Arts offer arts activities for kids. If they love the theatre, take in a show at the
Spare Parts Puppet Theatre , or pay a visit to the
Pickled Fairy . Don't forget that Freo boasts a cinema at
Hoyts Millennium if you're thinking of catching a movie, while there's also
Timezone for some good old-fashioned fun and games.
Historical Attractions
Fremantle is absolutely packed to the brim with history and awesome kid-friendly museums. There's the
Maritime Museum , a look at WA's marine history, plus the
Shipwreck Galleries , where you and the kids can learn about the infamous Batavia Mutiny of 1629. The gallery is also home to
HMAS Ovens , an authentic submarine which older kids can take a tour of. Be warned though – there are tunnels and small openings to navigate.
Let's not forget WA's only World Heritage Listed building –
Fremantle Prison . I took my nephew there a couple of years ago (he was about seven at the time) and I thought he might get bored. How naive of me. He asked more questions than all the adults put together. It's a great activity for kids to learn about Fremantle's history as a penal colony and it's early settlement days. If they're hungry for more horrible history, take them to the
Roundhouse , the oldest prison in the county, where prisoners were housed before the prison was built. Here, they can learn about corporal punishment and early life as a prisoner. For even more fascinating history, head to the
Army Museum of WA for a look the state's role in war through the ages.
For a different look at Fremantle, take a
tram ride through the streets, or for something completely eerie, embark on a
ghostly tour of Freo, where you'll learn all about the most haunted buildings around. Creepy!
Free Things To Do
Fremantle has some great free attractions to keep the kids entertained, including Esplanade Park, where you'll find a lovely shaded playground and lots of places to roll out a picnic rug, plus the
Esplanade Skate Park , which has skate ramps and scooter paths galore. You can take a wander around the
Fremantle Markets or the
E-Shed Markets from Fridays to Sundays. For a more somber experience, pay a visit to
Monument Hill – a memorial dedicated to the sacrifices local people have made in war.
Dining out
There's a heap of kid-friendly dining venues in Fremantle, including the iconic
Little Creatures , which has a giant sandpit for the kids to play in. Its only drawback is a lack of highchairs, so take a pram or booster chair along with you.
Outback Jacks has a cool kids play room and a great kids menu, while
Pizza Bella Roma is just downright noisy, totally family-friendly and serves delicious Italian food. Down at Fisherman's Wharf, you can enjoy fish and chips at the equally family friendly
Cicerellos or
Kailis . If the kids want dessert, there's no shortage of gelato, ice cream and frozen yoghurt outlets to choose from, including
Dolce Vita Gelato ,
Baskin Robbins ,
Cold Rock ,
Ben & Jerry's ,
Freo Ice Cream & Waffles ,
Tutti Frutti …..there are heaps of other options for desserts, but you'll have to discover those for yourself!
Beaches
If you need a swim once all that food and gelato has digested, head to Bathers Beach at Fisherman's Wharf or South Beach, which has a café, a playground and a dog beach.
Phew! After all this activity, you can bet the kids will be ready for an early night. So head down to Fremantle and enjoy all the family-friendly spoils for yourself.
