I'm sure many of you out there have experienced the wonderous joy of CityRail delays. Where you hear the announcement chime and hear that your train will be twenty minutes late. You're stuck where you are impatiently waiting for the next train to arrive which never does, and you pray that you were on a train, and those who are on a train pray that they weren't.

Now I know that most of you would just instantly grab your phone and start texting or playing games or expressing your rage over facebook or twitter, but what if your phone didn't work?

What if your golden lifeline to the outside world had run out of batteries? What would you do then to kill time waiting for your train?

My golden rule, carry a pack of cards with you in your bag at all times. I will admit I do when you have those long uni breaks and nothing to do, cards. Now I don't necessarily mean just any normal playing cards where you could play everyday games like big two, hearts, solitaire or snap. No, you also could bring proper card games like citadels or Bang! Cards are quick, easy and portable for instant fun.

Well if you are on the train, here's something which you might already do, there is a game called 24 (or some people also play 10 on trains) where you look at your carriage number and using only simple addition, multiplication, division and subtraction you must arrange the numbers so that they make 24.

e.g. 3586 is, 6 minus 5 is 1, 3 times 8 is 24, 24 times 1 is 24.
If you're with friends, try and race to see who can figure it out first.

Another I've noticed is that the CityRail map is pretty big, and full of pretty funny names. If you're alone, you'd be surprised at what you'd find if you actually studied the map for a while. If you're with friends you could try and find the funniest name about, or name a place at random and the first person to find it on the map wins!

Now, most likely if you're stuck on a platform, you'll be stuck with other people. Something to pass the time is just look at people and make up stories for them, what kind of life would they lead, where are they headed, are they really a superhero in disguise? I'm not saying stare at people and freak them out, or follow them to see what they really do, but people are intersting and don't forget that they talk too. If you really wanted you could strike up a conversation to pass the time. You already have a great conversation starter, "gah, CityRail am I right?"

I figure cloud watching is more for those of a relaxed mind, not people running about going why is my train so late, I'm in a rush, I have no time for clouds! But it's a well known passtime to watch the clouds and see what shapes they make. Who knows, it may calm you down enough that time appears to just float by.

If you can see roads out of your train window or accross the platfrom, play spotto. Every yellow car you see counts as a point. Try and gain as many points as you can over your friends! If you want to be daring add in punchbuggy for every volkswagon buggy you see you get another point, a yellow one is double!

Eye-spy is another underrated game to play whilst stuck in a CityRail jam. It's easy, fun, and you don't need to bring anything with you. If you think it's boring obviously you're just not picking silly enough objects! For those really nerdy kids out there you could play scientific eye-spy for example I spy P,P. What is it you say? Photosynthetic plants! (Although to be fair all plants are photosynthetic) you may think these strange scientific ones are hard to get, but if you study the same subject usually you think of the same ones funnily enough.

Last but certainly not least, if you're bored and stuck on CityRail, just shut your eyes and take a nap until the whole ordeal is over.

So I hope with some of these ideas, next time you're on CityRail you won't be so tediously bored.
