Remember You Do Not Drink
Things to do to Cheer Up

Here's a real life scenario.

You have just arrived home from work and within five minutes your teenager advises you you know nothing about hard work. Another kid loses it because they don't want to be part of mum's shuttle service tonight. There is an unexpected extra $300 on the phone bill. Then you discover that the mince defrosting for dinner has already been discovered and devoured by the dog.

The final straw is that you realise that there is no wine in the house. You think regretfully about that flyer you threw out that could have enabled you to have a dozen mixed wines delivered every month. Of course that would be no use whatsoever either because you remember are a non-drinker.

Whatever your reason, you need some ideas to cheer you up and you are in luck. These are tried and tested ideas.

Go to a Random Live Show

Melbourne is the city to find a live show, something unexpected every night of the week. Why not just turn up and buy tickets for whatever show is currently playing. Here are some ideas for venues:

You can't go past the Butterfly club for its range of unique shows. The kitsch is worth a visit alone.

The Wesley Anne in Northcote runs different shows almost every night, from family-friendly to risqué burlesque acts. The Moulin Beige: comedy, cabaret and variety acts on the first Tuesday of every month. The Wesley Anne has an outdoor area, unique bar and the theatre.

The Comedy Theatre runs top shows all year such as Dave Hughes, Wogboys, The Rocky Horror Show and John Cleese. They also feature a diverse range of entertainment.

The Regent Theatre; lavish, grand and steeped with a turbulent history. It is well known for it's world famous live shows such as Disney's The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Sunset Boulevard, Wicked, Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Play a Board Game

There's nothing like taking some time out to play a board or card game. It's great in the summer to get out of the heat or winter to stay warm and cosy. There's minimum mess and lots of good old-fashioned fun.

So many games to choose from

There are many lists on the web about the most popular for example: The Ranker includes Chess, Monopoly and Scrabble in the top five best board games of all time.

Beaumont Enterprises includes: Chess, Checkers, Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo, Backgammon, Life 5, Battleship, Pictionary, Connect 4, Scattergram and Cranium.

My favorite board game

I am surprised that Chinese Checkers didn't make it onto these lists. I love an across the board move. Overall, I think it depends on how much time you have and what mood you are in. I love a game of Monopoly but it's an all day event! I hate being beaten at Scrabble, so I don't want to play it if I need cheering up. Snakes and Ladders fit both bills. I don't mind losing if it's by chance.

Pamper Yourself
It's not easy to find half an hour where you can have some uninterrupted space to do whatever you want. Some people pencil it out in their diaries ahead of time. It seems ridiculously contrived but certainly better than nothing. Here's some ideas to do in your 'pamper yourself scheduled time'.

Run a hot bath and light a scented candle. Do some exfoliating. Princess Diana used almond oil while her skin was still wet.

Have your nails done with an added extra, like sparkles. Get a pedicure while you are there. I find it hard to bear but it feels and looks a lot better later.

Make yourself a nice hot drink. If you drink green tea, it has fluoride in it, it's healthier for your teeth and in general. I love a fresh juice with watermelon, cantaloupe, banana and pineapple.

Have your eyebrows and eyelashes done in a natural and painless way.

Grab a book, turn off the phone and find a comfy lounge at a coffee ship that has your favourite sweet.

Go Shopping
Believe it or not, shopping is proven to be good for you. Shopping is associated with increased activity in the part of the brain linked to positive thinking and pleasure (Britain's Brunel University, 2008). You don't need to worry; you don't have to spend money every time you need your spirits lifted. You can get the same benefits from window shopping. There are some provisos, if you hate shopping this won't work for you and in my experience; a three year old needing a sleep can severely dampen the mood.

I don't really care if the benefits are psychological, emotional or social, I'm going for it. I love shopping and finding a bargain. Some popular buys for women are sexy lingerie, scented candles, hairdressing, a massage, new pillow, jewellery or accessory you always wanted.
