A couple of quick Qantas flights took me from Brisbane to Cairns and then Cairns to Horn Island. Securing a chartered coach and ferrry service with McDonalds Charter Boats takes you from Horn Island Airport to Thursday Island wharf. The 15-minute ride is spectacular and the water is full of changing stunning blues and brilliant aquas.
The climate is hot and humid and only shorts and shirts are required all year round. The people are extremely friendly and welcoming here with loads of big hearty smiles. The Island is full of general services and facilities for you to live your normal living standards. There is a great Sports Complex here that has a 50m pool, full gymnasium and a basketball stadium. The local library is a great shelter to study and seek solace from the heat too!
The island can be circumnavigated in about 15 kilometres on pushbike easily and allows you to take in all of the beautiful tourist spots. The island has some amazing fishing opportunities and there are other islands nearby where fishing is also accessible. The locals are in boats always jutting from island to island, fishing and transporting locals from one place to another. There are a number of beaches here on "TI" and is used heavily by locals for swimming at low tide, but be warned that crocodiles are prevalent here and there are warning signs at all water entrances.
If you care for photography and love nature then this place is a gold mine. You have the opportunity for sunrises and sunsets on the same day within a 5-minute drive of each other. The water is magnificent and the sun gives it a beautiful elegance. There are great locations like Green Hill Fort that was constructed to fight off invasions from the north and gives you a sensational aspect of adjoining islands in the Torres Strait.
