Birthdays are special at the best of times. Birthdays are times for celebration, joy, time with family and in acknowledging those all important milestones. It is the time of year that you get to celebrate you, and all things you. Well, you've survived another year right? Absolutely.

Many Sydneysiders like to enjoy the outdoors and life out and about. They love doing the latter in addition to spending some quality time celebrating with their family and friends.

These are the best things to do on your birthday, and not necessarily in order of preference:

1. Enjoy those Birthday freebies

Even though there is no such thing as a free lunch, yet on your birthday it can feel like that. The catch is that you need to be a member of these loyalty programs. The best one's in Sydney include a free original juice or smoothie from Boost Juice, and a free six inch sub and bottle of water at Subway. The original Green Tea Mango Mantra from Boost Juice, and the Chicken Teriyaki sub from Subway are fantastic. Many of my Sydney friends (on their birthdays) enjoy being treated to a Sumo Salad Pumpkin and Pine Nut Salad, and a free ice cream (70 grams) at Baskin Robbins. Free treats on your birthday are provided if you sign up to their clubs/loyalty programs.

2. Go and get some exercise

Exercise is adrenalin pumping at the best of times. Just visit any Fitness First Gym in the city, and their Body Attack and Yoga classes are full of exercise enthusiasts regardless of the time of day. The Les Mills Body Attack (with Jade) and Body Balance (with Patty, the group fitness manager) combination - Body Attack first and then the awesome recovery follows on a Friday lunchtime at Fitness First Park Street. This is the best thing to do on your birthday. Worth swapping $22 as a casual visitor for when my last birthday fell on a Friday, to work out to these two awesome classes on the trot. Even if your birthday doesn't happen to fall on a Friday, their workouts are worth it any day of the week. However, if your birthday falls on a Sunday; you will have to wait another year to experience. Fitness First in Park Street also has great shower facilities.

3. Have a massage

Thai Remedy at Balmain provides an amazing (yet not overly painful) remedial massage experience. You are taken upstairs, and are placed in a room designed for two people with curtains to barricade your space. Tranquillity, peace and quiet is still the order of the day. $50 buys you a 30-minute remedial massage. You can choose which body parts you would like the therapist to concentrate on the most, otherwise an all body massage is fantastic. You choose the pressure level as well.

Furthermore, I still had the family dinner where I got to choose the menu. That was on the same night after engaging in the above activities. A few helpful hints to ensure your next birthday in Sydney is a great one. Happy Birthday in advance.
