Mark Thursday the 26th of January in your calendar, as there will be a variety of exciting and patriotic events happening around Brisbane to mark and commemorate the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788.
One of two main Australia Day events in Brisbane is the Parklands festival, an elaborate and free outing that will see Southbank immersed in a glorious display of colours, sounds and movement. Some of Queensland's most talented performers will be entertaining audiences and community groups will be displaying their talents as well.
For families and hobbyists, there will be a plethora of creative, hands-on activities and a stage program to become involved in.
A Multi-Faith Ceremony will be held to acknowledge and reflect on Australia's diverse culture. This will be happening early on in the day, so be sure to get a good sleep the night before to be ready for it.
In the evening, the AusSounds concert and a fireworks display will conclude the celebrations and will be excitement not to be missed.
Main events at Southbank start at 10:00AM.
A flag raising ceremony, presented by the Australian Defence Force, will take place at 11:00AM in the Cultural Forecourt at Southbank. The Governor and Premier of Queensland and the Lord Mayor of Brisbane will be present to give insight into the role of the ADF and its current relevance in our nation. The Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island, Queensland and Australian flag will be raised and the ceremony will conclude with a breathtaking F/A-18F Super Hornet flypast and a traditional 21 gun salute at 12 noon.
On top of all of this, the Clem Jones promenade is the best spot for premium viewing of an Australia Day first – the extreme ski shows on the Brisbane River.
For an interesting alternative to the grandiose Australia Day celebrations, there is always "Australia Day In The Office," a nationally recognised event where working Australians are encouraged to take a break in their day to indulge in a morning tea, barbecue lunch or simply a break in the day to acknowledge our great country and its heritage.
To register a party, access their website (linked below) and sign up to receive your toolkit, consisting of Australia Day themed posters, a National Anthem resource, National Symbol Summary resource, Australian Flag, key messages regarding the day and a list of ideas on how to celebrate it in the workplace.
With all this available, there is no excuse to sit around on Australia Day with nothing to do. So, get out there and enjoy the vibrant Australian culture.
