For a look at the old world of the Netherlands, take a day trip to Zaanse Schans.

It is located in the North Holland town of Zaandam and was created when distinctive green coloured wooden houses and historic windmills were relocated here to build a village that is made to look like it would have in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

Along with taking in the sight of these old windmills, there are many walking and cycling tracks around the area and a variety of places to eat in Zaanse Schans and the surrounding area, so you should be able to find food that suits your taste buds.

As we were staying close to a train station and had purchased a multi-day ticket, we choose to take the train as it didn't cost us any extra to visit.

The journey only takes around 17 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal to the town of Zaandam that is just north of Amsterdam, once you get off the train, its only a short fifteen-minute walk on flat ground and across a bridge.

There are several other options to get there, one of the popular ones being by bike; you can peddle your way there in around an hour along one of the many bike paths in the area, and you get to take in more of the surrounding scenery by going at your own pace.

You can also take your bike on the train outside of rush hour but will still need to purchase a ticket for it unless it is foldable,
If it's foldable, you can take it with you at any time without paying extra as it is then classed as luggage.

Travelling by car type "Schansend7" into your GPS and it should find the right spot. Parking costs €10.00 per day.

The 391 bus runs from Amsterdam Centraal runs every fifteen minutes to Zaanse Schans.

It doesn't cost to wander around the village, but some of the windmills charge you to go in and take a look around.

There are a few that let you take a look around part of them without paying, and we found the free ones to be good enough to satisfy our interest in them.

We happily bought goods in the gift shops that they use to support them. They sell a variety of locally produced products and handicrafts so you can find something unique to the area.

A visit here can easily fill a full day, and there is plenty of things to see and do for all ages, with many of the attractions being unique to the Netherlands.
