Shepparton is about 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne on the Goulburn River. The town is well known for farming and fruit-picking, but deserves more attention as a family holiday destination. Parks and activities for the kids, pleasant cafes and shops along Maude Street, and a vibrant arts scene, make Shepparton well worth a visit.

Shepparton Art Museum has free entry, and is located at 70 Welsford Street Shepparton. Enquiries: (03) 5832 9861, [email protected]. After checking out the art, a good place for lunch is the Friar Cafe at 127 Friars Street Shepparton. It is set in an old church, with most meals at around $15.

SPC Ardmona KidsTown is a short drive away at 7287 Midland Highway in Mooroopna. The venue has giant slides, a maze, and plenty of places for the kids to run around. Enquiries: (03) 5831 4213, [email protected]

Kyabram Fauna Park at 75 Lake Road Kyabam, is about 30 minutes drive from Shepparton, and has a large collection of Australian fauna. The kids will love this place. Enquiries: (03) 5852 2883, [email protected]

If you are staying overnight, there are several accommodation options including Best Western Plus, The Carrington , at 505 Wyndham Street Carrington. It has range of accommodation options from $150 and up, including family rooms, deluxe rooms, and spa suites. There is also a restaurant, conference facilities, and a pool.
