The perfect city for your weekend getaway
For years now, people from all over the world have been coming to Galle for their weekend getaways. If you want to join this club, take a look at the things you can do in Galle over a weekend.
If you are a morning person who likes to be up and about, sipping coffee or even strolling about looking at the views, you can squeeze a yoga session into your day.
There are many places in Galle that conduct morning yoga classes, and there is no more perfect way to begin your day than with a session of yoga that will calm you down for the relaxing weekend ahead. Many Galle hotels also conduct their own sessions, so if you want to do Surya Namaskar with literally no travelling, look for a hotel that offers yoga.

After morning yoga, have a nice long shower and get ready for an authentic Sri Lankan breakfast at your hotel. Hotels like The Fortress Resort & Spa also offer intercontinental cuisines for breakfast, but it is a good idea to try the local dishes as that will let you experience Galle completely. The usual dishes one can find at a breakfast in Sri Lanka are milk rice and gravy or string hoppers and curry.
After a nice, languid breakfast followed by a great cup of coffee or tea, get ready to explore the town. Galle Fort is a pretty small town with a few streets to its name. Wherever you walk, you'd either end up at the beaches or at the town square, so there is no need to carry a map or have your Google maps open on your phone.
Even if you did require directions, the people at Galle Fort are always happy to help you out by pointing you in the right direction. A few places you can check out first are the Dutch Reformed Church, the All Saints Church, and the Fort Meeran Mosque. All these cultural sites are close to each other, and by the time you are done exploring, it will be time for an early lunch.
There are many great cafes in Galle Fort, be its hole in the wall restaurants or more elite and posh places. If you are craving something simple, you can always check out the burger shops around town. Anything from crepes to noodles, fried rice, koththu rotti, and noodles can be found around Galle Fort.
The high-end places are the ones that serve Italian and Japanese cuisines, and if you are in the mood for a slow, long lunch, dropping by the Fort Bazaar is a great idea. Being a coastal town, seafood is the one ingredient that you'll find in many dishes.
Walking down the streets of Galle Fort after lunch, you'll find many local stores. The gem shops and boutique stores in town are seemingly infinite and you can spend a good hour or two shopping, or even window shopping. The afternoon sun might make you sleepy, so try to hang out at places that offer air conditioning. Also, carry a water bottle around to stay hydrated.
Ice Cream Time
Any trip to Galle isn't complete without a visit to the Pedlar's Inn ice cream store. Stop by this beautiful shop on your weekend in Galle, and after you buy yourself a cone, start walking to the Galle Fort Lighthouse.
This is one of the most photographed locations in all of the Galle Fort, and for good reason too. This tall structure provides the perfect backdrop for any beach picture you might want to take at the promenade and is frequented by visitors at all times of the day.
Being a World Heritage Site, this place needs no introduction at all. Do visit this magnificent stone fortress and enjoy the infinite views of the sea it offers from its strong walls. The sunset is a time you must not miss viewing when in Galle Fort, as it completes your trip.
