If you find yourself in and around the southern most point of Western Australia, here are a few things you might want to do whilst you're there.

1. Augusta Historical Museum
If you are into your history at all then the Augusta Historical Museum needs to be on your list of things to do. With a fascinating collection of artifacts, photographs and books documenting the rich history of the Augusta-Margaret River region you won't be disappointed.

2. Jewel Cave
Jewel Cave is the furthest south of all the Margaret River region caves, about 10 minutes outside Augusta and is the largest of the 'show caves' in the area, with four massive chambers. It also has one of the longest straw stalactites found in any tourist cave in the world. You do need to have a moderate level of fitness for this cave, as there are a number of steps to go up and down into the cave, but it is well worth it. The views in the cave are spectacular with many different crystal formations throughout and even with your guided tour, there's plenty of opportunity to take photos and enjoy the views. The guided tours run daily, every hour from 9.30am with the last tour leaving at 3.30pm.

3. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse
Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is the most southern mainland lighthouse in all of Australia, and it is also the tallest mainland lighthouse in Western Australia. The lighthouse was originally built in 1896. The light was a kerosene wick lamp until 1982 when it was switched to an electric light which is still in operation to this day. Standing 39 metres high, you'll need to climb 186 steps to get to the top and see the magnificent view of where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.

If you're lucky enough, like I was, you may get to see a pod of dolphins swimming off the coast, or if the time is right, whales. The lighthouse is open daily from 8.45am til 5pm daily, and you can just walk the grounds on a self guided audio tour, there is a cost involved for this. If you want to climb the lighthouse, this can only be done via a guided tour, which go every half hour from 9am til 4.30pm. The lighthouse is located 10 minutes south of Augusta, at the very end of the Leeuwin Road, which costs $20 per person.
